Why are you getting TT Explorer I?

I know there is 50/50 split of people who love or think 36mm TT Explorer I is overpriced and it’s to close to TT Datejust pricing. Currently I have two watches I wear the 1999 14270 Explorer I on a NATO strap as my daily and 2017 116710BLNR on the weekend’s. Talked to the AD and I plan to get one this summer. I personally love the look of TT Explorer and think it nice low key TT Rolex and it’s a watch I want that can help establish a new relationship with an AD.

Why are you getting TT Explorer I?

Eventually I will want a black dial “sports” watch from Rolex. My grail right now is the root beer GMT. The Explorer TT dial looks great to me with the gold touches on the numbers and other indices. The problem I have with the watch is the 36MM size.

36 is the only problem I have with it.

I'm not getting one, but I think it's okay.

I think it will look great and much better than the photos reveal.

If you have to buy a watch to help "establish" your relationship with your AD you either need to find a better AD or change your tactic. Perhaps I got lucky but where I shop for Rolex never put me on a list and got me what I wanted in a month, sometimes longer for harder to get items. All I had to do was be respectful, knowledgeable, and honest. On the topic of the TT Explorer, it baffles me. As far as I know, watches aren't trending smaller on a man's wrist, so why make it smaller? I know a ton of people who aren't even considering this Explorer at all due to its smaller dimensions. And this is supposed to be the model that is representative of climbing Everest, would anyone in their right mind wear a gold or partially gold watch to the highest mountain in the world?

Saw it in person last night at a Rolex Boutique "unveiling" party, it looked better in the pictures. I think Rolex is running out of ideas.

If we think this way the Sub could never be done in PM, diving is much more riskier for the watch then hiking, lol.

The TT Exp 1?? It's a great watch for the special lady in your life.

(disclaimer: I say this as someone who wears a 36mm daily and love the 36mm size).

I dig it but I have to see it in person. 36mm is a great size for me. I also realized it fits in nicely with my “nothing but dogs” collection.
Rolex turn o graph ( gaining pop now but hated at launch )
Yachtmaster 40 rhodium ( its stunning but not loved. Only a week wait at the AD)
Cellini 5214/6 ( gah ! It’s so gorgeous. The year sold on mine is like 3 years after it was manufactured. Rolex cheapest platinum I believe )
Air king 34 ( bought for 2k used. Wrist is small enough to pull of a 34. Retro fun to wear )

I’m guessing many here should remember this one...OP 1002

So it’s not groundbreaking for TT on a basic model. Oh, and in late ‘70’s it was 34mm.

How does this fit the topic?
The Explorer is screw for screw identical to the current OP except for the name on the dial.

So I’d buy one if I was looking for a basic TT watch.

Well, apparently sherpa Tenzing Norgay was gifted a gold OP Datejust at the end of the (unsuccessful) Swiss attempt on Everest in 1952. It is believed that he was wearing it when he topped out with Hillary on Everest in 1953 - so, there you go...!

You beat me to it. SS or Gold or Two-Tone, back then they were all watches and gold was the most in demand metal. Nowadays the gold and bi-metal watches are treated as jewelry although that SS is just as much a jewelry as they are. So taking a mechanical SS watch to climb Everest especially on bracelet is as out of place as taking a bi-metal one, if you are not a romantic who aspire to climb Everest with their tool watch just like the first ascenders.

In that day, they were all tools, instruments, no one who are in their right mind would trust a mechanical watch to do an extreme physical sport that relies on that watch's accuracy to ascend, descend at least without a digital one as a primary. So it doesn't matter the Exp is two tone now, it is not the same tool anymore anyways.

Releasing a TT Exp alongside TT SD in the catalogue is just another reminder from Rolex that they don't market their watches as tool watches anymore but a luxury piece.

It takes a lot of money to climb Mount Everest. So I’m guessing Rolex is targeting
rich explorers.

No debate here the 36mm TT Explorer is not for everyone. Rolex is a luxury brand now so TT makes sense every sports model line had TT except Explorer line. I only want Rolex sports models this is the closest I will get to a dress watch. I know I am in minority but I love the release.

I quite like the new TT Explorer, but I prefer the apparently long-forgotten 5701, which had a date, too. Although only 34mm case.

I have the excellent 214270 39mm; don't mind the TT but 36 too small for me.

I want it because I prefer smaller watches. I also prefer Rolex watches without the Cyclops and would think it would compliment my collection - 114060, 126000 silver dial.

Pretty sure it was an OP that went to the top, the Explorer was "born" to commemorate that achievement

Umm... I'm pretty sure mountaineering is not merely hiking, and I'm also pretty sure mountaineering would be tougher on a watch than diving.

Two-tone in any of these tool watches is just unnecessary jewelry bling.

I'm afraid they ran out quite a while ago. Now only minor changes in size, dials and bezels.

I get your point Brian, but Rolex divers have been TT and full gold for several decades, so, at least to me, the Sea-Dweller going TT isn’t as “shocking” as the Explorer. After all, until now, all Explorers and Explorer IIs have been SS.

Anyway, if people like it, great, it’s just a watch. The “problem” is that the Explorer is now even more “just a watch” as it has lost some people of its authenticity (to me at least).
