Explorer 39 or 36 at retail

Hey folks,

I have a weird opportunity to exchange me Explorer 124270 with the discontinued 39mm. Taking into account the fact that I bought mine at retail, would you exchange it for a mint (basically unworn 214270)?

I love the 36mm more and prefer it to the 39mm but the 39’s value is only going up…

What would you do?

If you love the 124270 more then why would you trade it away?

Why would you trade a watch you love for a watch you dont like as much?

It sounds like you don’t really care about loving the watch, you just want something that will go up in value and you have FOMO that the 39 may go up faster than the 36. From an investment standpoint I don’t think it matters much - better to just enjoy the watch you like more.

I prefer the 124270 and no way would I exchange it for the 39. I don't care what they're worth.

if you want the watch go with the new 36 mm. but it sounds like you want investment advice. I would not get a 39mm explorer because I don't like them. I'm very glad the new explorers are back to 36!

I think the 39 is the better size and has the better bracelet/clasp. Placed side by side, I would pick the 39 over the 36.

However, I would always prefer to keep the watch you buy from an AD yourself. Part of me can't help but feel like it's "somebody else's watch" when you buy/trade for pre-owned. That, and you simply don't know anything about its history, when it isn't your own watch... (e.g. did it suffer any damage? gaskets/water seal violated? parts replaced? lost/stolen? ... too many variables and too many headaches).

Sounds like you're choosing between a watch you love wearing and a speculative investment it just so happens you can wear. If you like the 36 you should keep and wear it; if you think that the 39 is such a great investment, cash out of a different investment to buy it, but keep the two separate. I'm not a believer in selling stocks to buy watches or watches to buy stocks.

YES - it's discontinued so not making anymore of those babies. Besides it is an amazing watch!

The premise of this thread is so misguided, like much of what’s posted here of late. I don’t want to sound like Padi but this site is less and less about watches and more about angles, arbitrage and accumulation.

I own both the 214270 MKII and the 124270.
NO WAY I would ever trade the 36mm for the 39mm...I prefer the 124270 in nearly ever conceivable way!

You answered your own question, man: "I love the 36mm more and prefer it to the 39mm". Don't do it.

Explorer 39 or 36 at retail

Another small blow to the forum as a whole, one awful thread at a time. I tried the 36 and it was tiny on my wrist. I LOVE the 39. So I’d go that route. If I loved the 36, I’d go with it.

You want an investment, go elsewhere as there are better investments to be had. If you actually enjoy watches, keep the one you love.

I would do that trade in a heartbeat and not look back. 39mm rocks.

I would keep the watch I like more, and not trade it for a watch that I like less.

Go after the watch size you love, 36. No need to keep 39 if you don't love it. doesn't matter the price is going up or not, you don't love it, you aint gonna wear it as much. If you sell Exp39, you won't loose money doing so.

I personally love the 39mm version and would advice to do that trade if you have a 6.5in+ wrist. Having said that, go with whichever you like more.

I personally like the 39mm variant and you can also throw it on rubber or OF and it looks pretty amazing.

Get what you like, not what you speculate will be worth more. You will be happier that way.
