I like the Breitling but not with the holesaw mini dials.

That Breitling is beautiful. The JLC looks dull to me. It may be a better made watch with more finishing on the movement but the dial is boring. Fortunately there are so many watches to choose from that we can all enjoy looking at and wearing our watches.

I saw both last week in display cases (didn’t try them on). Both are really nice designs. I did come away thinking that the JLC was easier to read than the Breitling for my 50+ year old eyes and the JLC appeared to have a thinner case. But both very nice.

I prefer the JLC for manufacturing of movements.

Breitling for me. Especially when it comes time to pay for a service. Always liked Breitling, Robust and accurate.

Not a fair contest at all.
JLC is true haute horologie, Breitling mass produced high street.

I like the dial of the Breitling better, but prefer the dimensions and movement of the JLC. Too bad. For the money that one would spend on either (and subsequent loss of value on either), I'd want everything to be perfect.

JLC. Better movement. Better proportions.

I'm not so familiar with the strengths of their movements but aesthetically, I prefer the Breitling. The salmon dial is so beautiful.

I voted JLC here but I do think the JLC is also just a bit uninspiring.

JLC is in a different class than Breitling. I own a couple pieces from each brand, including the JLC Master Calendar.
The only thing I like more about the Datora is the color of the dial. Between those 2, I would pick the JLC. |

I wouldn’t put JLC and Breitling in the same league , so unfair comparison.

At first glance the Breitling catches my eye but a close exam the dial looks pretty bad. I don’t know if it’s just this picture but the number on the bottom look squished and almost hand written.

I was able to try both watches on one afternoon, albeit not side by side.
The Breitling Premier Datora is striking in person with that classically styled salmon dial, good looking syringe hands, lovely moonphase, and blued accents. However, at 42mm, it wears a bit large and is very thick on wrist (15.3mm). The pistachio dial 40mm Premier B09 Chronograph wears much better on wrist and isn't too terribly thick at 13.0mm. I know that 2.3mm difference in thickness doesn't seem like much but when on wrist, the Datora was like a hockey puck while the B09 was simply a bit thicker than I'd like but not bad. The JLC Master Control Chronograph Calendar fits me much better with its 40mm diameter and 12.05mm thickness. While not as immediately striking as the Breitling, I think it's a safer and more versatile choice. With it's complications and design, quick change straps and quick changedeployant, it would make for a great all around watch and pairing it with a water resistant diver or GMT on a bracelet would make for a great two watch collection that would cover most bases. As for movements, both use integrated chronograph column wheel movements with a calendar moonphase module. the Datora uses a Concepto modified 7750 movement while the JLC's is, of course, in house. Not surprisingly, the JLC's movement is better finished with the better looking movement. As for overall quality and brand reputation, I would certainly give JLC the edge over the Breitling. I own watches from both brands and like both brands but JLC is definitely a class above Breitling. Yes, the JLC is more expensive but it's worth it, in my opinion, and would be my choice unless one was really in love with the look Breitling. Although I have too many watches, I could see myself owning both the pistachio dial 40mm Premier B09 Chronograph and the JLC Master Control Chronograph Calendar. If Breitling ever does release the B09 Chronograph with the salmon dial, I would definitely add it to my collection. |
