I currently have a Blancpain fifty fathoms 5015 and have considered trading for a new Speedmaster or a Sub.

I really love the BP but I’m worried that I’m going to crack this crystal bezel. Unfortunately, I have a tendency to bump my watches.

Should I keep or???

the FF is an amazing watch if you can pull off the size and isn't so ubiquitous like the Speedy or Sub. Definitely a conversation starter, and unique in the wild.

Lol, you're not any more likely to crack the bezel than you are to crack the crystal on any watch. The crystal of the bezel is fully supported unlike the one over the dial of any watch which is only mounted on the periphery, and it is very scratch resistant. I've banged the crap out of them, sapphire still looks great.

If you crack the bezel can't you get a new one? The amount of value you will lose doing a trade for a Sub will pay for many bezels.

This. The bezel is sapphire and you'd have to really hit it hard and just right to severely damage it and even if you did, you can get it replaced. The same goes for the ceramic bezel on the Submariner.

I own a Fifty Fathoms and a Submariner and the former is a far nicer watch. You'll also probably take a bath on the Blancpain if you paid retail and were to sell it. If you're just wanting a new watch like a Speedmaster or a Rolex, I'd keep the Blancpain and add a Sapphire Sandwich or an Ed White and maybe a GMT-II or an Explorer II for a different complication. That would make for a great trio.

It’s a sapphire bezel. Short of you smashing it with a large diamond, it will be fine.

I’ve been wearing the crap out of my Milspec for over three years now…not one issue.

Also, not to start a whole thing here but the fifty fathoms is objectively a better watch than the sub (I can say this from personal experience as well).

if you have the wrist to entertain a FF, then I would certainly not consider the "downgrade". The worry seem to be unfounded based on the feedback above.

I’ve broken the sapphire crystal twice on my Rolex Milgauss, was an expensive repair, but now it’s fine. I don’t worry about my sports watches, if they break I fix them, don’t see why your Blancpaim would be any different.

Yeah I would too… the BP FF is a great watch and I love the sapphire bezel.

i was always curious, what's the timekeeping like + / - per day? i believe BP doesn't quite advertise it unlike Rolex's 'superlative chronometer' branding but I'd imagine the BP is superlative as well?

I don't know if BP specs an accuracy rate but both of mine are +/- 2 s / day. The 1315 is adjusted in a full 6 positions and is the most consistently accurate movement I've owned, Rolex and much more expensive/complicated movements included.

Thanks Ajw. I guess marketing plays a role whien picking a watch. For me it came down to the Fifty Fathoms Grande Date on sailcloth vs the Sub Date 41mm; my heart said go for the FF grande date. The brain insisted on the new Sub 41mm. I ended up with the Sub date, but I still long for a Fifty Fathoms. I especially love the big date version.

I suspect the 'superlative chronometer' mark had its impact on my decision (plus value retention tbh)

I would stay with the fifty. Great " tough " watch. No worries. Get it insured for piece of mind.

Mine has been less than +1 second per day for the past three years. And, to the question about the fragility of the crystal, I wouldn’t worry too much. Mine looks brand new even after wearing it nearly every day.
