Thoughts on this 1979 Datejust 16013?

Hey guys,

About to pull the trigger on this 16013 two tone with linen dial. Seller is KJian414 also goes by consultants_of_time in case anyone had done a transaction with him.

It is a 1979. Does anything look out of place? He said the bracelet was tightened. I like the linen dial but have never seen in person. Any feedback on this watch before I send the payment would be much appreciated. Thanks

If you were born before 1950 you're good to go. ;-)

I’m a fan - have a few 16013’s. Looks like the bracelet had definitely been restored. You might ask to see the numbers on the clasp. It appears to have little to no stretch. Jubilee’s this age tend to have a lot of stretch. I would guess a recent service - but ask - seems to have a new crown and crystal.

I can’t comment on asking price or what you’re looking to pay…

I would say the condition of the linen isn’t very good anymore. Also the hands look dirty. Don’t like the endlinks to be as flat as this one. For the price I would look a little further.

I've never come across a dealer who doesn't build a significant margin for negotiation into the asking price. I'd surmise that's what's happened here.

I'd be looking to pay low-to-mid 4s, tops.

.
As mentioned, check the ref numbers on the clasp.

It has mismatched end links, one older. 455 and 455b. You can see the wear difference on the 12 o'clock.

Nothing wrong with paying top price if all is originally legit but this does not appear to be.

Good Luck!

How realistic is that though? That’s at least 800 lower that when we on forums are listing them for. Last year my local dealers were paying 4k for mine in this market they’re probably paying more.

Asking prices are out of touch these days. I wonder how much people actually pay for a mediocre TT DJ.

Oh people are buying alright, not sure about TT DJ but the people are buying up the pie pan 1600/1601/1603 up in volume. The engine turned 1603/16030 are going for 4k easy which I’m assuming because people like collecting them now? But I definitely agree with you that prices have gone bat shit crazy but I highly doubt prices will drop down to anywhere near what they used to be pre COVID.

I didn't say prices were going down or that people weren't buying DJs for 4k. In fact, $4k would be a screaming deal for a decent 4-digit SS DJ these days. But looking at your previous post in this thread, you seemed to be suggesting that it wasn't realistic to buy a run-of-the-mill TT DJ below $5k. Clearly people are asking that, but I certainly wouldn't pay it, unless it was something really special.

Anyway it's important to be cognizant of market nuances, and TT examples always sell at a discount (and often sit unsold), so I'm suggesting to the OP that he needs to do his research and make careful comparisons.

All other issues aside, that dial looks as if it's got some staining on it. The left side of the dial is darker, and the right side has some lighter patches. Not very attractive.

Also, note the difference in the patina on the hour markers compared to the patina on the hands. Tritium doesn't always age the same, of course, but I'd wager that the dial and hands weren't born in this case together.

I'd keep looking.

Oh no a run of the mill basic TT DJ is possible in the high 4k range. The comment I was replying to said low to mid 4k tops so I under the assumption that he meant to that market value for one of these would be in the low 4k range for an average run of the mill TT DJ in terms of condition which is highly unlikely in this market.

[EDIT] ^ Referring to 5 digit TT DJ as stated in the title by OP

I would have to disagree with you on TT being sold at discounts as I feel that it’s only recently has TT priced been lower than SS/WG on some models. When I first got into vintage Rolex 3 or so years ago I vividly remember TT listed for higher than SS/WG on forums. Either that or this damn workload at my job Is driving me insane lol
