Gift for my father: Longines vs Tag Hauer?

My father is turning 60 this year and I am planning to gift him a watch.

I was thinking between Tag Heuer Carrera or Longines Spirit but I can't decide. I don't know much about these brands.

My dad owns a basic Seiko diver watch and Hamilton watch (I believe I saw those two). Nothing super expensive or fancy. which one do you like better? Note that my dad has normal size wrist so I am not sure if he can pull 40+ watches well.

My budget is around $3,000 and I prefer two-tone (if it fits in my budget) if you have any other recs!

I'm not sure I'd go with this Longines, but Longines is definitely a much more classic and timeless brand. My dad's favorite brand is Longines and always wanted one but wouldn't allow himself to buy one. I plan to do it for him next time i visit.

Hmmm, older eyes... and what he feels is a timepiece.... Longines.

If I may suggest, Longines TUX dial simple time-only model if you don't need higher WP rating. Legibility....

Of those 2 choices I prefer the Tag.

Have you cindered other models from Logines?

Does he like a bracelet? I find that I am starting to prefer straps as I get older.

I prefer Longines over Tag, but Oris over both. Honestly, though, you can’t go wrong - they’re all terrific - and what a lovely gift for your father!!! Good luck, let us know what you pick.

Longines over Tag as a brand, however, check out the Raymond Weil offerings. They fly under the radar and make some darn good watches at that price point. Also, I think Rado is making a great watch these days. Some even COSC certified. Captain Cook line is excellent value for the $.

my dad's wrist isn't tiny at all. he gained a lot of weight after retiring, but his eyes have never been good. so a model with easy to read dial is important imo.

something simple like the master collection would be nice. I'd post the link, but the page won't load and says error.... that's a bit of a bad mistake for an international brand haha.

Unless you're getting a TAG Heuer with an in house movement, of which they currently truly have only one (the 02) and it's a chronograph, I think the ETA movements in Longines are better than the Selitas in the TAG Heuers. (My watchmaker has warned me about Selitas so I try to avoid them.) Have you considered the Heritage series from Longines?

Your watch maker is a wise man! They are NOT eta by any stretch of the imagination. Even the COSC sellita in the Breitling SO pales in comparison to the Longines ETA. I believe the new L888.5 will hold there own with all but the Omega co- axial. Amazing accuracy.

I am in Thailand now for work. There are many "Tag Hauers" along sukhumvit that are worth a look. Some actually even have working second hands!

Out of those two brands I would go Longines. If it was for your son or daughter I would go Tag.
Oris is a good shout from others as well. Have you checked out their new calibre 400 movement? 5 day power reserve which could be a nice feature for your dad.

I definitively vote Longines over tag. Blindly.

If you were interested (Don’t think your dad cares) about a nice in-house movement, sport watches with bauhaus minimalistic style, and great legibility … Nomos-glashuette They have lots of interesting models. The Tangente, for example, is simple.

Nomos is a great and appreciated brand amongst aficionados, in Europe at least. it ticks the right boxes for a high quality in-house movement deserving of a watch-nut conversation. Your dad fortunately does not suffer from the same disease we do, so he will be ULTRA HAPPY with a reliable quality watch from a prestigious brand gifted by his Child. And rightly so if I may add!!!
