hi just bid and won a rolex date just on ebay

serial number is 6130117

is this a proper serial number

Great time to be asking. If you post a link to the listing or some pictures of the watch, people here will be able to help you with better information.

That number indicates a watch made in 1949.

I can't tell a thing from those cruddy pictures. That box looks off, the bezel is aftermarket and those papers are meaningless...Proceed with caution.

On Ebay, a fuzzy picture of a Rolex is a scam until proven otherwise. Other red flags is that the seller has no prior history of high priced sales. His last item sold appears to have been removed by Ebay but the buyer (probably a shill) gave him positive feedback.

Too many warning flags here...

I wouldn't just walk away. I would freaking haul a$$ away from this one. I smell a scam. The pictures are bad, too much aftermarket bits on it, and question of authenticity.

Take the bad feedback and contact eBay that you learned it had fake parts.

I would not touch this one. I do not know how to get out of an eBay commitment, but I would suggest you find a way.

1. Pictures are bad (on purpose?) to the point of being useless.
2. A real Frankenwatch-bezel and dial are aftermarket.
3. Is the bracelet Rolex? Not stated and impossible to tell from the pics.
4. Seller has no track record on eBay.
5. Valuation paperwork is of no value.

Biggest question: If it is worth 5500 why sell for less than a third of that?

Hope you can escape this one. You can buy a nice, authentic and original DJ for that money.

Watch was not made in 1949! It has a 6 mil serial #. Circa early '80s.

If you paid with PAYPAL, you have 45 days to claim foul!

Overall from the pictures, price, sellers feedback and description tells me that its authenticity is doubtful..I would stay away.

seller has said he will bring watch to my local rolex service centre to verify.

i,like all of you am very sceptical but he has maintained contact so the least ican do is give him the benefit of doubt.

can anyone tell me if the serial number is credible.

the serial no. is only a small part, but yes the no. puts the watch as early 80's. please take note of the many negative comments above and tread with extreme caution.

a face to face exchange, with Rolex to verify would be the only way to go.

Not really, he gets a strike and that's about it.

The bad part with the new rules are that a high bidder not only can pass on the item, (For whatever reason) and on top of that give the seller neg. feedback..

fellows i am a little old school on this matter. looking to backing out after a deal is made is bad business.

if the buyer has solid ground (something IS NOT RIGHT), or the seller has misrepresented an item or not performed, then the buyer has grounds to back out of the deal.

w/ respect i sign contracts every month, and if something isn't as agreed, void it if it can't be resolved.

looking for an out (the way i see it) after you've won a bid is weak. NO one made you bid and this is why i don't and won't sell high end on the bay.(my feedback is 100%).

by the way i also do business where contracts are also verbal. hard to enforce,
but word would get around if i crawfished!

phoned rolex today

watch serial number indicates 1981=82 date just that is also neither lost or stolen.

i will call seller now and meet him at rolex service centre for a valuation.

Chrisma, there is no way to tell from the photographs posted in this auction if the watch is genuine, fake or has aftermarket parts. Other factors should be considered concerning the auction and the seller - to include his feedback, previous sales, item description, quality of the photographs, previous sales history, feedback etc. as mentioned by others here on the forum. Now that the auction is over, you seem to be headed in the right direction by having it examined by an authorized Rolex dealer before making payment.

With all said and done, as we see quite often here on the forum, the watch should be examined before the purchase if there are questions of authenticity. There are many con-artists out there that are jumping at the chance to separate us from our hard earned money. Hopefully, you won't be one of those victims, now or in the future.

hi all

watch was verified by my local rolex service centre as the genuine article.

it needed about £400 worth of work to bring it up to scratch tho.

bracelet shouders were not made for that case and the internals were dirty and missing a screw.

watch maker could not put strap back together either.

i tried to bargain with the seller who would only budge a few pounds.

i walked away from the deal!!!! went to my local rolex dealer and bought a new GMT 2!!!!!!gold strap and bezel type.

what have i done?????????
