15550ST for 116500

Hi fellow forum members

Hypothetical question.

If one was to have a 15550ST light silver dial 50th anniversary and contemplating the idea of trading for a 116500 white dial plus cash to me ?

Let me know what you think.

Depends on the amount of cash (everything has a price) but otherwise not a chance. AP is a while different ballgame than a Daytona imo

15550ST for 116500

AP is in another category. I would consider platinum or another variant (meteorite) because I love Chronograph and those are rare birds. But a panda vs 50th anniversary royal oak, no way.

Panda will be sold at retail for many more years. With some patience you could get one at retail.

AP 50th only will be for this year.

A daytona is basically a toyota in the world of elite watches. It's a no from me, in this lifetime and next.

Did you get the 15550ST from a boutique? Is it registered in your name? In that case the trade would be 15550ST = 116500 + cash - any chance of getting another AP at retail. Something to consider when determining the amount of cash that would make this worthwhile.

15550 is much more special, i wouldn't trade it for a steel daytona

a steel AP competes with a PM rolex in my opinion

Thanks everyone for your input, keeping the AP and waiting for the Daytona at retail.

A Steel AP is way ahead of a PM Rolex in my opinion... There is absolutely nothing of benefit with a PM Rolex. You're buying what is essentially a base model with a 35-40k upcharge for 3-4k of PM materials. There's no added finishing, there's less exclusivity (outside of price of entry), and the hues are obnoxiously loud. At best you can hope for a "day" feature as a benefit if you were to buy a DD ... a 'complication' available on sub $1k watches. Hard pass in my mind.

Your kind of leaving the question too open in not specifying the “cash”. Talking like €5k, €50k,…?

But if it’s <€20k I wouldn’t even think about it given it’s a 50th anniversary.

AP and Rolex are in two different leagues. I have problems with downgrading, so I would avoid closing this trade.

Best I was offered when asked couple dealers who had Daytona white dial for sale was an even trade, my AP for a Daytona, no cash my way.

They made it sound like the AP was an inferior, hard to move piece. I guess they mostly all paid way too much for the Daytona in the first place and are trying to recover their loss on me.

No way it is a fair trade nor a trade that even remotely makes sense. I laughed and happily walked away with my AP still on my wrist.

Id not. I own both and I can pick up a 116500 any day of the week from the grey, but I will only ever be allocated one 15550. Far scarcer, far more beautiful (though they are totally different), and just more special IMO.

Id not be surprised the 116500s continue to gradually drop in prices after some time as more come into the market and more supply gradually starts coming out. (I'd actually be surprised if they dont correct further. Even $35K is nuts for the Daytona).
Though that is besides the point, I think you should keep the 15550.

Good plan. You'll be disappointed with the Daytona dial quality after staring at your AP. You need a PM Daytona with some depth and texture to hold up.

100% agree with you. on all the points. The 15550 stays with me, truly unique and oh so beautiful.

I am ok with the fact all these grays have to make a living, we all have, but it showed to me how unscrupulous and greedy they are.

Pretty much how I feel also, but I am still amazed by the sheer number of people willing to pay astronomical prices for it. Retail of 13 and these days trading at around 33, this is a steep premium for a civic
