124060 vs 16610LV

Folks,

Need a little of you wisdom with making a decision.

I am re-considering my 124060 purchase and about alternatives.

Would you get a 124060 new from an AD or a 16610LV from 2005 with papers, unpolished with a bit of a lemon faded insert?

On the surface I prefer the LV, however there are a few things:

1. The price is a little under market price but still pretty high

2. There is something about a pre-owned watch (not vintage) that is a bit different- you don’t know the exact history and what you will find down the road.

3. The seller is reliable but I have to bought from him in the past.

I am considering the LV since it would he my choice of how the case should be, the dimensions and the looks. But as I said, i am a bit hesitant due to the reasons mentioned and the high price of the piece.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

What I currently have (Rolex wise) is a 16660, 124270

I'd have the 16610LV for sure. Far more character, comfort and appreciation to go..

I would get the 16610LV over the 124060. After some time, and several watches, I’ve come around that the 5-digit references fit me better, that I prefer the light weight bracelet, and that I really like the aesthetics (slimmer lugs, anodized aluminum, etc).

I just acquired a 16610LV and love it. The green is so interesting, and the 16610 LV with its many variations is such a cool watch to “collect.” It’s the first green sport watch, the first maxi dial — again just very cool.

I found this article helpful regarding the LV: https://www.watchclub.com/curated-by...ry-sub-decoded

The 124060 is a great modern watch. It’s sleek, symmetrical, and in my opinion the best of the cerachrom sport watches (as black cerachrom really shines in a way the more hyped colored versions do not).

However, the 124060 is still in production - so you can always come back to it if you don’t like the 16610LV. And to me, ultimately I just like the size, fit, and aesthetics of the 5-digit versions slightly more.

I'd take the new one. You had to get the old one then and at the price of then.

The other thing to consider is whether you prefer how the 5 digit wears compared to the 6.

I was in a similar predicament a few months ago. I have a 124060 but I really wanted to add an LV into the mix. Green is my favorite color yet the hulk is too much for me. I had worn a number of Kermit’s and thought my mind was made up until I finally saw one of the new Cermits in person. Changed my mind completely and asked my SA for one. So just something to consider and if you have a chance try one on. For me the only downside is the probability of movement issues. Which is a pretty big downside but it just wears nicer. Plus getting the LV at retail is a nice bonus. I just don’t think the 16610LV is worth the extra money but if your heart is there go for it!

I think the best of both worlds is the new 126610LV (for me anyway).
Otherwise, given your collection I would add the OG 16610LV.

Having had all of them (unfortunately sometimes more than once). The benefit of the 5 digit LV was to me I could easily swap the bezel to black for a look change up, and back again. But I currently have a cermit (thankfully at retail) and with an Everest band is my daily.

What this all says, it’s totally up to the individual, opinions are great, but it’s your satisfaction in the end that matters.

I'd go for 16610LV personally, it's more special than a regular Sub......

Another view, side by side.

Tough choice… but hard to beat the original Kermit.

124060. If it was the 126610LV that would be my choice (I actually traded my 124060 in for the LV). To me, the case, ceramic bezel and bracelet are big upgrades on the 12s. Go for the 124060, or why not the 122610LV?

I say this with the assumption that you love both and 5 and 6 digit Submariners.

Because it is older, will only get harder to get, and is out of production, I would favor the 16610LV by default if you have a good lead on one that is in good shape (which it sounds like you do). It has an extremely reliable and robust movement, although if you don't know the service history for certain, it is reasonable to assume it will need a full overhaul at some point very soon. The biggest drawback, IMHO, is the lack of Glidelock. Also, FWIW, I do not personally think this is a model where prices are going to flatline, as I do not think the buyers of an older LV are the same ones paying largely inflated prices for current references. Also, FWIW, I think it is one of the coolest more modern references.

I love, love, the 16610LV…I’ve had a few. I recently made this decision and I chose the 124060. I know the LV desirable and discontinued, but I think the 124060 is the better watch for the money.

I find more joy in the 5 digit references, especially with lugholes.

“2. There is something about a pre-owned watch (not vintage) that is a bit different- you don’t know the exact history and what you will find down the road.”

Regarding your concern, unlike vintage a newer watch can be brought back to original condition for most issues.

Given a choice of the two you are looking at I chose a 4 line 14060m. (Had the LV)
The number of years of production of the 14060m cosc was the same as the LV.

But the great benefit are the super cool lugholes!

Of the two you are choosing between I would probably go with the current sub as neither have the beloved lugholes :). The LV is a meaningful transitional reference but the simple black vs green bezel is a bit more timeless for me.

I’d go for the 11 series instead.
Fat strong case with the better movement.

Between your choices the LV

I'd take the LV, the triple 6 looks like a no date from arm's length anyway.

If I was going to get a watch and park it in the safe because any damage to the insert, case, or bracelet would knock thousands of its value, I would go for the 16610LV.

If I wanted a watch to wear and enjoy without fear I would go for the 124060.

Interesting responses and I am still undecided… I tend to go with the LV, I just wish they weren’t as expensive as they are… hard to imagine that they go for almost twice as much as a new Sub

Agree. This is why the 124060 is the better watch. The LV is not a $15-$20,000 watch no matter how you slice it. You have to accept that you missed the window to buy a 16610LV when they were valued correctly and move on.

In the scheme of things the LV deserves a premium before 99% of the other watches that are hyped. It is a transitional reference with a modern dial in 5 digit case and had a relatively short run. A small bonus is the bezel can be swapped out for black changing the look of the watch.

I still lean toward the 14060m for the lug holes and no date but the LV is a solid purchase at market imho.

I'd take the 16610LV over any ceramic Sub.

As a ceramic sub owner…I have to admit that the 16610LV is the one to have. The 5 digit subs are just so much more special imo. The big caveat…ensure that you trust the seller and that the watch is fully documented. Long-term value will be better on the 5 digit too if you care about that…

Best of luck with your decision. Both great watches.
