New job . . . New watch . . . Can you still walk in an AD and buy one?

So the tradition continues - perhaps my last outing buying a watch to celebrate a new job as it is getting late in my career.

The question is, can one still buy a Rolex without promising a first born?

I have a GMT, Datejust and Daytona - would like a Sky Dweller . . . In stainless if possible. In the NYC metro area and wondering if I should even bother looking or just start researching other brands.

Not interested in used or grey market - want to buy directly from Rolex AD or boutique. Price is less of a concern but I will have an issue paying over list, especially when I compare with other brands . . . . I’d also have an issue being forced to buy something I don’t need or want to get on a list.

So - how is it out there?

No. Not what you’re looking for.

You can buy at retail after you buy other ladies, two tone, and or precious metals at retail. Often times you won’t get to choose because they don’t have stock in that either.

New job, hope it pays more, the grey price for white sky is not that much more. Best of luck.

This one is negotiable. You can probably find one cheaper on forum.: https://www.chrono24.com/rolex/sky-d...id26640757.htm

Its getting better. I was on waitlist since mid Nov for a DJ41 blue (zero purchase). AD texted me to pick it up this weekend. And this is one of the bigest ADs in my area. However, popular models like gmt/sub still have a 1-2 year waitlist unless u spend $XXXXX.

Not likely in the NYC Metro area. Maybe in CA where they still have ADs at every exit of the freeway.

blue would probably be impossible. white and black doable if you get lucky but in nyc that's much harder

grey prices for white and black are probably slightly over msrp+tax

I would go in and tell your story. You are getting back in at the right time. A year ago I would say it is a long wait, now it is a much shorter wait. I am betting in another year they will be available on the shelves.

I wish...

There are only TWO AD's (one is a Rolex only boutique) here in Whale's Vagina for a population of 3.3 million.

Nigh impossible to get anything here, so many big spending whales.

I guess that means you are almost twice as likely to get something compared to us here in Maryland. With 6.2 million people we have 2 ADs left and it's a fairly wealthy area to boot.

You still can. Walked in, asked for exp1 ss. Sa said he can do it in A week. But i knew she has one in the back but just she wont sell me right away that day. She texted me after 3 days to purchase it. Not a sub or gmt but its happening.

You're right. They keep no date subs and explorers in the back to start relationships with promising walk ins. You passed

Looks great

Congrats - but let's be honest it's also an E1, not a blue faced SkyDweller... These two have demands that are miles apart

Sky D not going to happen without major purchase history or going grey...blue one at MSRP is a pipe dream...might as well wish for wings.

I'm in CA, with a half dozen ADs within driving distance. Walk in SkyD would be next to impossible in stainless in any dial color. Most difficult in Blue Jub.

Maybe if you want a TT, OF, Full PM it's possible you could luck out with some fortuitous timing.

As others have said, a SS with either black or white is realistic. TT even easier.

Not as a walk-in on first visit. But show face and stop by once a month or so. 6 months to a year….maybe.

On second thought, grey markup may not be bad on the white or black dial. Take a gander.

I put my name on the list today for a sub and gmt. I felt like the sales guy and I hit it off in a way that a Rolex sales person hadn't before. Many times previously the sales staff ignored me and didn't even let me try anything on. This time was a bit different. Maybe my time will come this year. Maybe for my birthday.

Where do you buy the GMT, DJ and Dayton from? Buy there again.

It's a big ask and with your issues with other avenues, likely impossible.

If nothing else is catching your eye, particularly outside of Rolex, I'd say you're stuck at least in the short term.

I'd make a list about what you like in the SkyD in design and functionality and see what else is out there from other brands.

I have been called twice in three weeks from AD asking me to purchase an Explorer II….the first time I just couldn’t work it out as I live a long way from the AD…the second time I have not responded as of yet…
I put my name on their list almost four years ago….I’m just wondering if they can’t get someone to purchase this Explorer II??

This. Assuming you bought from an AD, that would be the first place to revisit.
If you bought them from resellers, why the reluctance now?

Probably not much chance unless you trade your Daytona or GMT toward it at an AD that also sells pre-owned. Otherwise likely best to just pay the grey premium and celebrate your achievement (congrats btw!). If you buy something else you’ll likely end up still having the itch for a SkyD. If you’re buying to keep and hold onto, there’s no real worries about paying over MSRP. Besides, MSRP is just an arbitrary number; the value of anything is what someone else will pay you for it so as long as you find a competitive grey price from a trusted seller you’re not really over paying. The “tax” of buying pieces or jewelry you don’t want will probably exceed the grey premium and at least with a grey transaction it’s guaranteed.

I would say you start up a new research for other models, because it will be hard to walk in and walk out with your choice even if it looks like things are getting better.

Just answering a few questions - I bought 2 datejusts and a Daytona from one AD, GMT was purchased from an AD no longer in business. Even with those purchases, never really a relationship thing - the one AD who is still in business carries many other and more expensive brands, and my impression based on their non existent after sale follow up leads me to believe they could care less about small sales. All watches were purchased new, and they aren’t going anywhere - all promised to one of the kids already.

Not to start something, But I have posts on here saying as much - I don’t get the idea of purchasing from anyone but an AD for an item like this. Back in the early 2000’s it was about getting a minor discount which wasn’t worth the risk either in money handling issues or authenticity - trusted seller is right up there with jumbo shrimp for me. And why there was (is?) a watch out section in this forum.

In terms of other candidates, looking at the VC Overseas dual time but I hear they are also hard to come by . . . .suggestions welcome. Something with a different complication preferred from a better brand.

I’d look at moda or a trusted seller on here for a vc dual time.
