Advice & Opinions Requested
Hello,
I am currently trying to make a decision on a trade and would like to get some expert opinions. BTW I realize that these decisions are many times based on personal preference but I'm trying to rationalize...perhaps you can help. Here goes... I have an opportunity to trade my Datejust 16233 it's an X serial (1991) for a 2003 sub no date. Both watches are in excellent condition and neither has box or papers. The trade entials me paying $150 in addition to the trade. What do you think? I bought my datejust pre-owned and it's a great watch but TT seems to be out and SS in and I figure I'm getting a newer watch (no date though...that may take some getting used to). Anyway I appreciate your opinions....thanks! Go Yankees |

First off, welcome to TRF.
Secondly, you nailed it when you said its about personal preference. That also is valid with your comment about TT seems to be "out" I disagree and believe that TT is more in than it ever has been. The WIS crowd may feel that SS is the only way to go, but it makes up a very very small percentage of what is really out there, I am pretty sure that 95% or more of the watch buyers out there DON'T visit forums such as this and therefore the numbers we get on all things are skewed. Now as to what you should do about the trade, based on how you have presented your info I think you are leaning towards getting the more "in" SS Sub ![]() |

Thanks for the reply Roger
Still haven't made the decision. I look at the DJ and like the fact that it is easily recognized as a Rolex. I like the other too. I'm nervous though about buying from a private seller.

Just cannot today understand this fashion thing,so someone says SS is in.Then you ditch your TT and gold Why?????,surely you should wear what you like and not what someone dictates as in.Now regarding the trade, now afraid thats down to you.The Sub is a Rolex classic, but just make sure your trader is 100% OK before you deal.Myself not a fan of gold in watches so I would trade to the sub.

tough call. You might ask what he would sell the sub for outright. I personally like the TT DJ look. But the resale is not that high, you might be better off to just buy the sub without a trade.
Bur also be careful of who you buy from, and do your homework. |

If you're not happy with the DJ then by all means get rid of it. For the $150 difference, it would make sense if it's what you really want. By all means, do your homework on the seller. If you're not 100% sure about him/her, bail out of the deal PRONTO. ![]() Go Yanks ![]()

Wecome to TRF.
![]() ![]() However, I can assure you that steel & gold is not OUT, by any stretch of the imagination. Here is my collection: ![]() As you can see, TT is definitely IN for me. It is IN for a large segment of this board as well. I like steel & gold for aesthetic reasons, and because I have gold, silver and SS items that I like to wear at the same time, so TT makes sense to me. Even those that do not particularly like gold in watches (Peter) agree that making a decision based on perceived current fashion trends is not the way to go. ![]() Nuff Said! Anyway, best of luck with your trading desires. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Your 16233 would appear to be appraised at a higher dollar value. I agree with you leaning towards owning a SS SM (thats what I would rather have on my wrist) but you might do better to separate the deal. Correct me if I am wrong but the trade should be your watch for the SM plus additional cash in your pocket. I have not researched the values so anyone else can chime in with more accurate info.

Good deal?
Thanks for all the great comments...you all have some awesome collections...love the TT collection.
Does my trade (1991 DJ) + $150 sound right in trade for a 2003 Sub no date? Logically my watch should be worth more due to the gold content, however, given the current market dynamics I think that a 2003 sub no date has better resale value. I need a beer. ![]() |

I don't think the litte bit of gold makes a huge difference in a used watch. In new watches having gold makes the watch cost about 1000 more on the retail end. Take a discount from your fasvorite AD and the gap is smaller. There are more proffits for an AD when you get gold or diamonds.
Maybe you only have to come up with 150 because the watch has gold in it. I personally would go to an AD since I can't tell a good fake from the real thing yet. I'd rather spend a few thousand on the real thing and be certain of it, then give a favorite watch up for a "new trend" and have a doubt in my mind of the authenticy. The new watch could be either legit, a good fake, or a grey market real rolex with fake parts(aftermarket dial, fake band, etc.) |

The ND sub would be worh say $2500 to $3K the DJ for a 1991 would be about the same. Seen some Excellent condition newer TT DJs go for that price, so unless yours has factory diamonds, and in great condition, it seems fair. My concern would be more about is the sub you are getting legit. It very well could be, but you should try to make very sure of it and that you can trust the guy before proceeding. |

Just looking as one always does.
If it makes you feel better, came across this. http://www.watchseller.com/roldatsspser.html He gives fair prices for quality stuff. But this watch is 13 years newer than yours and only $3450. The ND sub keep their resale, if you were to go with the trade, I think you would be doing pretty good. (If I am off in my eval of resale on the ND sub, someone please chime in.) Anyway, just trying to be helpful. ![]() |

Don't forget that the Sub doesn't have a date function, if you are used to it, you will miss it.

If you take a look at these to pictures I owned both these watches up until last year. I adore both of them, but the two tone DJ looked spectacular and I felt the bees knees with it on. At the end of the day, which one speaks to you. Personally if I had the choice I would have the DJ. Its your call
