Why do they do this ?

Why do so many people ask strangers on this forum what watch they should buy ?

So many choices… where do I begin? I know, I’ll ask a total stranger.

Maybe they just need to see more watches in the metal. Eventually, one will sing and they won’t need to ask.

Because it's a watch forum and they want ideas, opinions and feedback, I guess.

Have to admit I don’t know why but I can also admit all my answers are total unconditional BS merely to hope we get follow up threads along the lines of ‘Traded my 1665 double red for an AP Offshore plus cash like you said and now I’m depressed’ , but they don’t always happen so I’m sad but still committed to the cause.

Why else would this forum exist if it weren't for questions like this? Whenever I'm shopping for unique items I talk to my friends who are knowledgable in those areas. Most of us don't know a lot of super watch nerds outside of the forums so it's kind of obvious to brainstorm here.

Plus you need a chance to say "just buy what you like!"

It's just "conversation".
Where else are you going to have a conversation about your favourite topic.
I'm fortunate to have a mate who is also a "Watch Freak" and we often shoot-the-breeze about favourite Brands/Models, but if you don't have any Watch-nut friends, then here is the place to do it.

Information and input from others can help. A lot of knowledge here on TRF and even if you filter out the posters who say," why are you asking me", some very good information is shared. Just part of the process for some.

It's just more information to consider when making a large purchase. I ask for suggestions, but in the end, I make the decision based on all the info I have. Similar to if I was to buy a new car or new tires for my car, I would seek out information like customer reviews online and so forth. Someone may bring new ideas about a watch I was considering based on their experience owning one that I wasn't aware of. I like to hear peoples' thoughts but I don't always listen.

Human herd mentality. Perhaps combined with the need for 'approval'. Social media thrives here.

Being 'different' takes effort, or ignoring the mainstream, or better still could be due to not being subjected to....

Inquiring about certain references, discussions, & comparisons make complete sense on a watch forum. However, YOU tell ME what I should buy doesn't, IMHO. Maybe for a washer & dryer, but not for something as personal as a watch.

I like to think a lot of them are on the fence and looking for some feedback or new information to help guide their decision. That's understandable.

If they are building a collection purely based on the opinions of others, that's really kinda boring and sad.

That's a perfectly legitimate question we often see on the TPF (the toilet paper forum).

There’s a rule in my house. If the package doesn’t have cute puppies or bears on it it’s not allowed in the house. Life’s too short to use crappy toilet paper. Pun may be intended.

This Forum ???

Why do millions walk around daily texting inane comments to total strangers and telling them everything they are doing in life?

Why do some ask total strangers on a forum what other strangers on the forum are doing?

Good Question. I can't answer it. IMHO I know what I like and buy according. I guess if I were torn between a few I may ask a friend for their opinion but that about it.

Making a decision should be a solo affair. Therefore you only have you to criticize you, rather than a collective.
