Icon4 GMT2 ...Should I even ask for this at my local AD? Zero purchase history?

So I'm on the waitlist at a AD for the sub date since last June ...not much traction but rep was honest enough to say without purchase history, it's a 12-18 month wait.

I just landed my dream (pre-retirement) job...really stoked and wanted to mark this achievement with a gmt2 but with the current state of Rolex buying, I highly doubt any AD (in their right state of mind) will even offer me one...haha.

I don't plan on spending money on Tudor or ladies watch etc...just want something to mark a event in my life chapter that will probably be my last (in terms of a job).

I mean I guess I can call my rep and have him change my preference from the sub to the gmt2 but he's already told me in the past that their store does NOT allocate gmt2 to anyone without purchase history.

Or is grey market my only choice here? Any other peasant here who was able to score a gmt2 from a AD (at least within 2 years and with zero purchase history)?

Cheers. Will raise a toast to nothing ...

Go gray and save the chase. You are unlikely to get the GMT from the AD based on what you described. Have you considered a 16710 instead?

if the AD has told you no chance without purchase history, then that's that

Which gmt do you want? I ask because I have a friend who recently scored a two tone rose gold on a walk in. I think if you want a BLNR, it’s quite a bit tougher without history. BLRO I would say is the closest to impossible.

Why is everyone so glum. Just purchase some jewelry for your significant other and boom, “purchase history” created. There’s no quicker path to a watch from an AD than by purchasing jewelry, which is high margin for the store. If not, then get a watch they have in stock - Tag, Breitling, whatever. Ask for a discount and then flip it for like a $500. Trust me, all of these things still get you ahead by purchasing direct from AD.

Don’t hate the player, hate the game!!

I'd try 100%. I did and it worked. I have no purchase history, and was honest from the start, I managed to get a Bluesy, then waited patiently for a GMT II.
Of course it depends on which country you are in and it is all a lucky dip, but my AD told me that some watches have been turned down maybe because of financial crisis some countries are experiencing.
You lose nothing trying, and constantly visiting them.
Only thing I will say is grey market prices have greatly dropped in a year so depends how much you are willing to pay.

Good luck .....

I have found that being passionate, knowledgeable about the brand, with an important life event the AD will find a way to help you out.

My friend just got a new GMT from an AD. It was their first watch. It took them 5 years of waiting and about 40 visits to "catch up".

I just got a new GMT Leftie from an AD. It was a 4 month wait. But I had already purchased about 10 watches and $5k of jewelry.

Just wait until about June 15th, when the U.S. Debt Ceiling fight causes the government to default on its debt (because the debt ceiling isn't raised). What will happen is that the military doesn't get paid, government workers don't get paid, Social Security doesn't get paid, Treasury Bonds become worthless, real estate market heads into a free fall, as will the stock market.

I can promise you that within a week, you'll be able to buy any Rolex you want, from any AD. It will be like 2008 again, when any and every Rolex was available, with 20% discounts liberally given on every "tool" Rolex watch (and more on two tones).

If they haven't sold you a Submariner, they won't sell you a GMT, and that 12-18 month time estimate could just be ficticois. Nobody likes paying grey market prices on Rolex but people do for a reason.

The chances of the debt ceiling drama being resolved (99.999999%) before this deadline are considerably higher than the OP chances of acquiring a GMT (0.0%) from the AD he has been visiting...

Try and cast your net as wide as you can visit as many local AD's as you can especially smaller independents that was the advice i followed from here and it worked for me. I approached several AD's and one came through on my Bluesy in 8 weeks with no spend history at all. Explain your circumstances and your passion in watches. I didn't want to go down the Grey market route, the watch was expensive enough without third parties profiting and also you do not get the experience of purchasing your watch from an AD.

If you are still waiting for a sub date, there’s no way they’re entertaining you for a steel GMT.

I’d either look more towards two tone models, or go grey before you retire

If you don't ask you don't get. The chances are admittedly low but there is no point in giving up before you've actually had the conversation. What they have told you in the past may still apply or it may not.

I also recommend meeting one in person before you buy and particularly if you go grey. It's a great watch but it is not worth twice the MSRP. What it represents may be worth the grey margin to you but materially, you'll get better value out of a TT CHNR, another fantastic GMT Master which is easier to get at MSRP.

It does, but it's fake news. The US government never stops operating even if they have no budget. If anyone is sent home, they are provided back-pay later once a budget is passed. Everybody still gets paid no matter what happens, people still get their SS checks. There is no visible change during periods of stalemate.

Anyway, with patience OP you'll probably get that GMT - however by that time it won't be connected to this personal milestone. Buy grey now and keep your place on the AD 'list' and don't wear your watch during AD visits. Years from now when you receive your 'allocation' sell the old one!

Probably go grey, and enjoy pre-retirement.

Just go grey. Get the watch you want now without all this waiting. You're on a "list," not a number in line. You could possibly never get the call..

I wish I would have gone grey market to begin with. If I had I would have a one-watch collection instead of the GMT Pepsi I wear daily, and 5 Rolexes sitting in the safe.

When did they tell you no GMT with no purchase history? I think ADs will be changing their tune on that soon, if they haven’t already.
And can you not have multiple models that you’re on the waitlist for?

If it were me and I could only tell them one, I’d try to get the GMT and just make a small purchase as soon as you can through them.
Then buy a Sub on the grey market sometime soon. Sell the Sub if they can deliver on the GMT.
I saw buy Sub grey just because it’s less premium vs the GMT.

This. It's better to purchase from an AD because who knows you may want to obtain another time piece from Rolex again., and have that purchase history.

Going Grey adds no value and not worth the marked up pricing.

I would probably remain focused on the sub, talk with your AD about updates on that, and mention your big news.

It seems to be “asked and answered” if the SA said no without purchase history.

I would go into the store and have the conversation with the SA in person and see what they say. Don't ask, don't get. If they put you off then the road is clear, use one of our Trusted Sellers. Find the watch you want from one of the big sellers, call up and discuss and negotiate. Pay and have the watch on your wrist by tomorrow by lunch. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Go grey, or find another AD, purchase history is not a requirement from all ADs
