New Sea Dweller Issue

I知 a new member here and I知 looking for experienced Rolex aficionados. I bought a new 43mm Sea Dweller ten-days ago from an authorized dealer, and the next day left for a three-week trip to Africa. In those ten-days more than half the time, at midnight, the date flips two days instead of one. Is this a common issue? This is my first Rolex and to say I知 disappointed is a gross understatement.

Not a common issue at all with Rolex - in fact, I can't remember ever hearing that before. Tudor have had a few date wheel issues on their GMTs, but Rolex tends to be pretty solid in that department. I think you've just been unlucky. A trip back to the AD I think.

Contact your AD and let them know the issue.
It's under warranty and will be an easy fix. The downside is you'll have to send it in for service, so you'll be without it for a little while. Not a very common issue and can understand your disappointment. The SD is a great watch. Don't let this minor issue distract you from that.

Sorry to hear this has happened. I would manually cycle the watch through the date function 1-30x and see if this may actually help. Not a significant service but one just the same should it need to go back. Let us know how you proceed.

Me neither, and not at all calling the OP a liar, but it's my understanding the "finger" that moves the date wheel builds up power ahead of the transition and releases it all at once, once per day.

I think the Sky Dweller advances two days on 30-day months, so the only thing I can think of is a parts mix up where a gear from a Sky Dweller got installed in a SD, but even that strikes me as a long shot.

Sorry to hear OP. I never experienced this issue with any of my Rolex pieces. Take it to the RSC sooner rather than later.

The watch knows you went to Africa for 3 weeks so was just keeping that timezone while you were gone. Should reset itself any day now.

Chances are OP will never get an explanation from RSC as to what the issue was.

It will get sent in by the AD, it will be returned fixed & that will be the end of it.

I知 my experience, Rolex seem to be very reluctant to divulge any info regarding issues with their movements.

I've been using/collecting Rolex for close to 30 years - I have never ever heard about this issue. Bring it back to the AD.

As an update, through the AD’s website I contacted them about this issue. Within 24-hours they telephoned me to say they’d be happy to send the watch in for service. I’m in Africa for another week and will either return it to the AD I purchased it from or wait to get back to my home area where there is also an AD. As suggested here I advanced the date manually 30+ times and one night it did advance at midnight only one day, but the next night it jumped two days again.

I looked at theses watches for over 20-years before finally purchasing one, and to have this problem with a watch that cost me more than the first brand-new car I bought is a terrific letdown. I purchased it to replace a Breitling SuperOcean that I wore for ten-years without a problem, and cost only 1/3 as much.

Update: I contacted the AD via their website and in less than 24-hours they telephoned me, saying they’d be happy to send the watch in for service. I have another week in Africa, and will either return the watch to the AD I purchased it from, or wait until I get to my home area where there also is an AD.

Following advice I received here, I manually advanced the date 30+ times but the problem persists; however, the watch did advance correctly once, but then the next night it skipped forward again.

I looked at Rolex for over twenty-years before deciding to purchase this watch, that cost more than the first new car I bought. I bought it to replace a Breitling SuperOcean I wore for over ten-years with a problem. Very disappointing, indeed.

To be honest, these things can happen which is why you have warranty. The important thing is the after sales service. If they sort out the issue in professional manner then it should be fine.

Once an IWC I bought had to be sent for warranty repair few days after I purchased it. Very good service from both AD and IWC and it was sorted efficiently.
