Wife wants a Pepsi GMT -- 16710 maybe?

She tried on the Pepsi that a woman we met was wearing and she, surprising to her, really liked it. (Oyster bracelet.) It's the first Rolex she's really wanted to own.

So . . . trying to decide which version. I dont know exactly which one she tried on but I'm pretty sure it was some year of the 16710. For her the 40mm case definitely makes the most sense, and I think she'd like a clean aluminum bezel look over cerachrom anyway. She def. wants the Oyster bracelet; doesn't like Jubilee on the GMT.

Any strong points for various years of the 16710? Maybe 2003-07 for a no holes case?

Prices don't seem to vary much from year to year; they seem to vary more just from seller to seller.

16700 has a thinner case. Besides it’s the last GMT Master.

IMO, the ceramic bezel would better maintain a crisp look. 40mm watches are worn by many, if not most ladies in the watch club I frequent.

2000 and later will have solid end links.

Is your wife one to wear the same watch everyday or will the GMT get some wrist time then be put away for a while? Does she travel a lot and need the independent GMT hand?

Reason I ask is unless she’s the type of person who enjoys interacting with her watch like most of us do, then the 16700 might be the choice for her. Both the 16700 and 16710 wear the same and are almost indistinguishable from each other. Unless you get close enough to see the missing II from the dial. The upside to the 16700 is the quick set date. Which if the watch isn’t worn all the time will make it easy for her to set when she wants to wear the watch. Unlike the 16710, which she would have to cycle the hour hand until she get to the correct date. The downside (depending on who you ask) of the 16700 is the GMT hand does not move independently and she would need to use the bezel to track a second time zone.

Just food for thought.

The 16710 is a classic and your wife makes a great choice. It’s a watch that offers up so many variations to changing the inserts and bracelet if you really want. For me I love mine on its oyster with coke insert and once you have one it’ll be a keeper. I would say having one with case holes makes bracelet changes a breeze.

Very helpful thanks. She definitely rotates through a few watches . . . but often hands them to me to set :)

But i do think she'd prefer the GMT hand to be moveable relative to the hour hand. . . although she'd likely never or VERY rarely actually use the GMT feature to track a 2nd timezone, so there's that.

The 16710 is a very versatile watch get all 3 inserts for very little money, then 3 different watches for the price of one.

Jubilee bracelet will hide scratches better then Oyster.

AD supplied and fitted 16710 bezel inserts are just £60 fitted in the UK, so get all three but be very careful changing them yourself, or ask the AD to do it each time at minimal cost.

It might be a determining factor if she can wear the solid end links or earlier model.

I guess it depends largely how she likes her watches to wear. Oversized is definitely a thing.

Not an expert here, but I personally would wouldn't pass on holes in the case if it was going to be more money. For me, I think the perfect setup would be holes/SEL, which I believe is a few years prior to what you're looking for.

As a bonus, if she ever wanted to get a new look for her watch, then it would be much easier to install. Good luck,

Tell that to my other half - she has wrists that are exactly the same size as our little boy who’s not even 1 yet (something in the ballpark of 4.5-4.75 inches.)

I’d like to get her a nice watch and have looked a couple of times in the last year but for the vast majority of watches, it’s surprisingly hard to find out the minimum size that bracelets can be adjusted to.

Edit: 16710 is a great choice! The later the model, the better for me.

I would make sure to get one with the SEL and prefer the no holes case. It’s such a beautiful watch. One of my favorite!

16710 has a few variants that you need to decide: Prior to 2000, they came with case holes and hollow end links (affectionately called rattlers). In 2000-2003, they had solid end links (SEL) with holes. From 2003 on they switched to no case holes and have a slightly dressier look. My favorite variant is in the 2000-2003 time with SEL and holes which give it the tool watch look I love.

There's also a VERY subtle difference in bezel insert fonts to consider. Prior to 2004ish, they used a fatter font (sometimes with serif embellishments on the numbers). After sometime around 2004/5 they switched to a thinner font with no serif. Service replacements are also thinner font. Less of a big deal but worth considering what look she likes.

I think a trip to a pre owned store is in order to see exactly what she likes and doesn’t as there are so many variables for it.

I would say 16710, but who knows, it’s hard to guess exactly what she wanted or experienced vs perceptions.

I'd say my wife's wrist is just a little larger but not much.

She wears a 34mm RO well, but "34" on those is a bit deceptive; they wear larger.

And the thing is she tried on someone's Pepsi/ Oyster a few months ago and liked it, so we know that in general it's what she wants.

Like others have pointed out, the 16700 has the quick-set date which can be advantageous and also a slightly thinner case. But 16710 is certainly an amazing model as well :)

And both have the option of exchanging bezels; pepsi, Coke and all black, which provides very nice expression differences of the watch.

If it matters at all the solid end links version will wear slightly larger than the pivoted end links IMO.
