Help ID Grandfather's Rolex (1988)
Sorry this is the only picture I have of it at this time. The only thing I know about it was that it was purchased in 1988.
Any help in direction to get this figured out would be much appreciated! |

Looks like a DayDate 18x38 but you can see the model engraved on the case if you remove the bracelet. I am not sure if the dial is original, as most dials with square diamond markers I have seen have the square diamonds set at an angle.

Interesting. So would that mean, original face, but added bezel and stone hour markers? If that is the case I wonder if it would be simple to remove stones for a fluted bezel/ original hour markers without damaging the face. |

If you don’t like the diamonds, your best option is simply to replace the dial and bezel. Modifying them is probably not a good idea.

Fair enough, I think that is what I would do. Would that be standard in a normal servicing or would that be priced out separately for parts?

The dial is probably not correct, but that diamond bezel may be factory original.
Let us know the reference number between the lugs when you have it in hand - Even if the reference number does not reflect a diamond bezel model, the bezel may still be a factory piece, as these bezels were popular as authorized upgrades sold by ADs. This thread will help you. |

In a normal servicing, that would be priced out separately. As would replacing any other aftermarket parts. To help better, can you share a good, well-lighted, sharply focused, photo of the backside of the watch? I know others asked about the engravings between the lugs - it would also help to see photos of them - but requires taking the bracelet off. You may need to visit a good watch shop for some help. I should mention that the replacement dial and bezel would run you thousands of dollars when included with Rolex’s required servicing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
