Best way to play this hand?

So I’ve been waiting for a BLRO stainless for a while at my AD. I’d say i have a good relationship with them.

I’m currently in the market for an engagement ring. I have a family jeweler who I imagine will be significantly less money to go with for the ring. But I would pay the extra money at my AD for the ring if a BLRO magically was pulled from the back room the same day.

What’s The best way to bring this scenario up?

Tell the AD you will buy the ring with a BLRO. At the same time.

And if he says “we don’t have one now, but this will help you get the call/call you when it comes”?

Tell him to pound sand. These watches aren’t that rare and if he really cares or your spend matters, you’ll have it within the week.

Just ask if you can do a package deal for the ring and the BLRO delivered together. Once you open the door and you say you have a good relationship with this store, it will be hard to back out of the ring if they say they will get you the watch later and not mess up your relationship.

I'd probably say that I want to celebrate with something for myself as well and would appreciate being able to buy the BLRO with it.

Buy the ring where it's most financially advantageous to do so.

Agree with this.

Trying to play hard ball with it and demand a Pepsi or you aren't buying the ring
could back fire on you.

Extortion isn't a good look.

Don’t guess, price shop both for the ring and see what happens. Be honest with the AD and discuss directly.

This and just ask for a timeline on the ring (assuming it needs to be sized etc) and then ask if you can get your BLRO at the same time so you and your fiancée can each have something nice to celebrate.

I would tell them that you would like to buy the ring, but only at the same time as a BLRO, I believe that would accelerate the timeline for the watch.
I do not believe the myth that most dealers’ safes are full of popular references, so I would expect a reasonable wait but I wouldn’t buy the ring with only a vague promise of the BLRO.

I can only speak from my experience but my AD didn’t get to be one of the highest volume dealers in the US by hoarding a bunch of watches in their safe. They have thousands of loyal clients waiting on their deliveries, they don’t need to keep extras around to entice anyone.

Option A
Bundle both on the basis that you will buy / collect at the same time - all or nothing

Option B
Buy the ring at the cheaper place, put the savings toward a secondary market BLRO

Correct. Buy the ring and watch separate for the max savings. That’s my take anyways. These ADs don’t appreciate crap anymore. Even if you get the package deal you will set a precedent for buying jewelry with watches.

Congrats on pending engagement! Exciting times in life!

The Pepsi is a cool watch but celebrating engagement is far superior. One of my favorite moments in life.

I agree with this. The ring I got was SIGNIFICANTLY nicer than what the Rolex AD had for the same price. I’m talking 3 steps up in both clarity and cut (or maybe 3 and 2).

“Hey, I’m buying an engagement ring and seeing as how I have have been on the list for a (insert Rolex here) for some time now, I wanted to see if there was any way we could get the watch and make both purchases happen.”
They will say no… then go buy a much better ring elsewhere for less money!

You ask for an opinion....here is mine........you have a family jeweler. Use him/her. The sentimental value in purchasing such a special ring from a trusted professional would mean more to me than using it as means to and ends.....to get a watch??? The wedding ring should be more than something you use to get an AD to take more money from you......just my thoughts.

I think you should just stick with your AD. You have a good relationship with them. Don't whip out any ultimatums. By the way, there's some rumors that production on the BLRO is having issues. Something to do with the ceramic curing process. So, it's quite possible that you simply can't get this one for the time being from any AD. No reason to try and be forceful about it.

As for what to do... here's a crazy thought: Get the ring your finance wants! Or at least the one you think they'd like the best.

it can’t hurt to ask. Just be tactful. Word it as a question, rather than a demand. Remember that, per Rolex, buying other non- Rolex jewelry should not improve your chances at getting an allocation . However, it does. It worked for me. We did buy my engagement ring, at the AD, and a few months later, I got the call that they had a watch for me.

Buy the BLRO on the gray market. Run off to Vegas and have a quick wedding and buy a ring in a year or two.
It should be noted that this is piss poor relationship advice, but it would get you the watch very quickly.

Support your family friend and pay less for their ring then buy the Rolex from a reseller adding in the money you saved on the ring. It’s a wash but you’re helping a friend and if the Rolex comes in at the AD route, you put your name on it and offer it to a friend or here.

The AD is in business. They know you’re a sale anyway but enough is enough.

If the family jeweler is indeed your family jeweler, go to them and get the prettiest and highest quality ring you can afford for your bride. They deserve your business. If you didn't have a family jeweler, then the AD route and trying to get the BLRO makes more sense.
If the BLRO is meant to be, it will be.

I think you should approach it like this:

I’m going to purchase a Diamond ring and at the same time you’ll find a BLRO allocation for me, OR ELSE…

AD: Excuse me?

You heard what I said. It’s your choice…

AD: What do you mean by “or else”?

If you refuse this transaction you’ll find out. Oh yes…

Agree, don’t play “the game”. Patience, put your name on multiple “list”.

Or buy a minty 90’s-00’s GMT… the older ones are so much cooler imho.

I could stomach dropping someone $2-500 cash if I really wanted something. If you are talking about spending an extra few thousand on a ring why not just buy the watch on the secondary market. It’s unfortunate what you guys are going through to get a $10-12k steel sports watch.

Playing hard ball as they say is foolish and counter productive unless you know with absolute certainty he has a BLRO available to sell you. Play too hard and you just might end your chance of ever getting any watch you want. The reality is the ADs have the power unless you want to go gray. Only you can judge the sincerity of your AD. Carefully think through your options before you make your decision. Good luck.
