Why does the Submariner bezel (and most dive watches, ftm) have the first 15 minutes displayed as minutes, and then change to 5 minute increments?

maybe it's just more practical for timing things without cluttering up the bezel... (i think)

if you turn the bezel and set it to the minute hand it will count down a fifteen minute dive. i'm sure some actual divers can fill us in on the real details!

The Rotating bezel on a sub is mono directional for the reason that if you are using it to calculate your dive time it will only shorten your dive duration giving you a safe dive. If it didn't you could bump it change the time of your dive and get in trouble with your dive tables and possbly get bent or the benz. To set it put the triangle on the minute hand and it will count your time of the dive to whatever predetermined time you need for your dive. Say you're diving to 80 feet you don't want to exceed 25 minutes before you start heading for the surface ,so when the minute hand is pointing at 25 on your bezel time to go up.That should do it . The minute markers used in the 15 minute range on the bezel is something Rolex has used since the '50s, and has been copied by other watch makers.

Dive times were based on Navy dive tables at the time. The ascent can be timed with the minute markers, especially if stops are necessary for de-comp dives.

Now, it is not necessary for this unique feature of the bezel for todays diving.
