Rolex future value?

Hello! I was wondering what will be the next Rolex to become rare and desirable amongst TRF opinion. I also was wondering what makes vintage models more desirable than the other. Is it Rolex for changing subtle details in popular models or is it the buyers who control this market. Kinda curious to hear the veterans take on this and what they think will be the next big one. Would like to hear any and all opinions for those with the knowledge and are willing to share.

Traditionally, the ones that go on to hold their value are the ones that don't initially sell. I reckon the non-GV Milgauss, probably the white dial, could well become a future collectors piece.

If you are looking for future collectibles, you need to look at models made a couple of decades ago at least. Models like the 5512/5513 will only gain in value, and other vintage models will only get harder to come buy over time. Basically, modern day Rolex watches are way to mass produced to be worth a darn 30 years down the road, they just won't be rare like some of the current vintage pieces.

Minor tweaks, different dial fonts are fine and dandy, but even those models were produced on the tens of thousands.

I kick myself for not buying some Panerai models when I got into Rolex. Those Pams have doubled and tripled in value while my Rolex watches lost a few grand. Difference being, you got it, production numbers.

Who knows but if we take a contrarian view we would say.None of them in 20 years the wrist watch will go the way of the pocket watch for the cell phone.
Food for thought.
Im sticking with my vintage Gmt for now.

Scary thought thinking of cell phone's as a timepiece. I get confused when I see people that just don't wear a watch. Not in a sense of style, but in a sense of do you you give a crap about being punctual.

The reason I mentioned this is I had 15 20 somethings working for me last year. They all made in excess of 6 figures and I would tell them to buy a Rolex and all of them would say I got a cell phone for time.I know all 20 somethings arent like this but if the next generations mentality is like this it was food for thought about whats gonna be the next hot one.Who knows

Jeremy,

Rarity may or may not factor into the desirability of a given reference. True there are some very desirable pieces that are rare, but there are some references that had a realatively long run that are considered extremely collectable. The 1655 and select 5512/13s come to mind.

In a general sense vintage (let's say acryllic for now) is/was the definition of "tool watch" and represented an era when these watches were used as part of "the equiment".

Certainly select mission specific references such as the Mil. Sub. varients, COMEX, even early GMTs and Explorers share a common theme in that they were used by and created for select people/groups and have attained almost magical status. Of course it helps that in the case of the Mil. Sub. and COMEX few were made and tightly controlled (at least at the time).

In some measure the same can be said for their gilt dial cousins (one wonders how many of these great dials were lost at service)

Todays pieces (though in many ways superior to the earlier brethern) number far to many to have any real rarity though some indeed have a certain desirability.

If I were to make a SWAG as to what might attain a certain status in the future (I don't know when) one place I would start to look is early matt dial transitionals.

References that combined a bit of the old with the new, there may offer future collectors useability and serviceability that is getting harder with the older pieces.

If I HAD to guess modern I'm still in the LV and 14060M camp PROVIDED there is a discontinuance of the classic style case in the near future( more like a phased withdrawal).

As with all things Rolex time will tell.

Mike I agree on the transitional. Specifically the 16750 and 16753 with nipple dial. The quickset feature makes a big difference to me.I have been hoarding these parts and watches for a few years..............Ill go out on a limb here and say at the moment there is no craze for this 1.But its far more rarer than any matte dialed 16750.How about the 1st series of WG glossy without the word date?We are talking 1 year if that.I am certain there are not many out there. Most dials spider cracked and got swaped out during service I have 3. 1 as early as an 831x serial. The latest being 842x.This was a short run.Looking at the back of the dial I have always wondered if this was the the date it was made 08 83 ?

In 20 years, without a doubt, the GMT 16700. There aren't many out there compared to the GMT II 16710, which was made during the same time. Grab a late 1980's to 1990 model while you can!!!!! Production on the 16700 ended in 1999 I believe.

Myself believe one of the next sort after watches from the 90s will be the 14060 with the tritium dial, could be the next vintage must have.If you can get hold of one mint with box papers etc,I believe that prices will rise in a few years time, could be the next investment piece. Now I don't normally recommend anyone owning watches just as pure investment

IMO I'd start looking for pristine Oysterquartz pieces. Only 25,000 were manufactured over 10 years - compare that to the estimated 500,000 watches Rolex sells every year. It's a lifetime movement and parts will be available until 2025. It's the most accurate movement Rolex produced and yet they remain unappreciated. The day could very easily come when they become hot collectables.

CLICK HERE or check out "The Best of Time" book for the fascinating history behind the Oysterquartz.

Just buy one, wear it, and hope in 20 years it's worth a little more then you paid for it. (and it probably will be if you don't trash it over those years.)

Just wear and enjoy!

Every new watch Rolex makes enjoys a big spike on the grey market, look @ ebay and the for sale section on here you can find them easily for under list by about 10-15% most of the time, hell even the new subs are listed around the same. I think that as soon as you pass the T>25 dial they were produced in too great of numbers to be collectable, with the exception of the oysterquartz.
