Rolex Upgrade? BLNR + DateJust for Skydweller

Hello all.

I needed some advice. I’ve been discussing with a grey dealer to upgrade my Rolex Batman 116710blnr from 2018 and DateJust 41 2019 126300 blue dial smooth bezel and jubilee bracelet for a Skydweller blue with jubilee bracelet. Initially the dealer asked for additional 1000 usd but he’s open to discussing ideas and prices. Advice needed:

1- is this a good ‘upgrade’ I have a submariner, Daytona currently. Thinking of minimizing the collection for this upgrade. Good idea?

2- how much extra should I pay or not pay?

Many thanks

Not knowing the market prices on your pieces (I don't follow the market that closely), I would personally not make that trade. I love the blue Sky-D on Jubilee. That is a beautiful watch! However, I think I would enjoy the BLNR and DJ more than the single Sky-D. Also, with your Sub and Daytona....the DJ and BLNR makes a great set! I would want to keep that. All very different pieces!

Thank you for the thoughts. I was considering consolidating the two in function and looks for one piece but you’ve got a good point about two different watches with my current setup.

I personally wouldn't make that trade. I prefer the BLNR to the Sky-Dweller though.

I would never do that trade. I tried on a Sky Dweller and immediately ruled it out, looks bloated, neither sporty or elegant. Your pair is so much nicer and both are sporty and elegant.

Hard no for me. The SkyD looks & feels too big. I'm all for consolidation, but I wouldn't give up a GMT2 & DJ for a SkyD. The functions of a SkyD are neat & if it was packaged 2-4mm smaller, it'd have more appeal to me.

No way in hell, not even for an even trade!

You have a sporty look with the GMT and a classic look with your Date. A skydweller is a hockey puck with a complication that you rarely (if ever) need/want and a weirdly illegible dial IMO.

Hard pass

Keep the BLNR and add cash for the SkyD, if you have the wrist for it.

Don’t know about the trade, but the blue sky is amazing in person.

I would do the trade, just make sure you’re not getting killed on price.

Give us the “value” he put on your 2 watches and how much he’s selling you the blue sky for

Love the blue SkyD - I like the size and fit. Feels better than the GMT II imo - wish it had a bit more heft.

I would try and do the trade through an AD. I realize it’ll take longer, but it would be worthwhile.

I would not, but it's all in the eye of the beholder and a call only the OP can make. Each to our own. Tough choice, good result either way.

As to the fairness of the proposed trade, I think the seller of the Sky Dweller is pitching high, but I don't claim any expertise.

If you have the wrist for the SkyD I say go for it! Otherwise the safer play is keep your BLNR and just trade the DJ plus more cash; you can always get a smooth bezel DJ back if you miss it and the blue SkyD holds value well if you end up not loving it.

Once you trade your GMT the only way to get it back (unless you have a killer AD) is to pay way over retail again which could make this an expensive mistake if you don’t love the Sky Dweller.

Good luck!!

Depends on the condition of the watches. That said, Blue Skydweller on jubilee trades around $22.5. Older reference Batman around $13/13.5. DJ varies a lot but probably around $10K or a bit south of 10K because it's the smooth bezel. Depending on condition of each watch, you could argue a few hundred here or there, but I think it's actually a pretty even trade on the money.

I did a similar move - I bought a Blue Skydweller and sold a Batman (not as part of one deal). Really love the Skydweller. It's an amazing dial and I think much more interesting than the Batman to look at, but a lot depends on your wrist size. Batman wears much smaller so it depends on your size preference.

My thinking was consolidation and upgrade so the sky dweller ticked the boxes. How are you enjoying the SD?

As much as I love the SD, I don’t think it’s an idea “one watch” in your scenario. I would rather you have your BLNR trade your DJ and add money. I had a fluted bezel and it’s a bling light show but it is also more fragile with daily abuse compared to your ceramic bezel. Just some observations. Hands down the SD movement is a flagship and more interesting.

Not an upgrade to me. Skydweller also to bulky for me, if you really want it trade the DJ plus cash.

Yeah if you want to consolidate it’ll check the blue watch box and it’s kind of a sporty/dressy blend (though I would never call it a dress watch due to its size). I really like it - Rolex doesn’t make many complicated watches, which I think makes the Skydweller quite cool. The sunburst blue face is also great - an alternative to the bluesy. I don’t daily it but you definitely could - the oyster would be a bit more casual though, I feel like the jubilee is more comfortable (I ended up buying both bracelets).

If its what you want, do the trade. It's not completely unreasonable what he's proposing depending on condition of all the watches.

If you have the wrist for the SkyD, I will do it, looks like an even deal depending on condition. However Another option will be to keep the Daytona, sub and the BLNR if you really want to consolidate & just sell the DJ.

I completely dig the SkyDweller, but I would not give up a BLNR for such.

I have the watches you mention as well, and also the blue SkyD.

I wouldn’t do it.

The SkyD is beautiful but I find myself wearing it very seldom, it’s a lot more shiny than any of the other watches you have.

I had been waiting for the Blue SkyD for a while and was so happy to finally get it, but I’ve probably worn ot less than 10 times in the past 3 years…

My BLNR is a frequent daily

SD on jubilee is only $15,900USD. Not sure what the others are worth but, sounds like you'll be losing $.
Happy collecting!

Oh wow. That’s really interesting. My rationale was to ‘upgrade’ and consolidate but seems like the Rolex watch community doesn’t agree which is making me reconsider too. Maybe it’s the desire for something new that’s risking what I already have. But the fact you’ve got the same and feel this way is very telling.

I know what you mean about the desire for something new. I guess it also depends on your lifestyle and how often you find yourself in circumstances where you think you will want to/be able to wear a SkyD. Just be aware it’s very shiny and does attract more attention than your other watches.

It’s still a beautiful watch though
