Rolex Polar Explorer II 216570 - good deal?

I have the opportunity to acquire my first luxury watch - a 2014 Explorer II, white dial, complete with box and papers, for $5k. It’s in great shape. Is this a steal? Looked around chrono24 and seems to point towards yes but couldn’t find a 2014 Polar on there to compare.

Almost too good a deal I’d exercise extreme caution but could be a score.

Awesome, thanks! It’s a family friend with a very elite collection, so it is worry free on that front. Not looking at it as an investment piece either, I have always loved the 216570. So that is also why I asked :)

Too good to be true without clear definitive provenance. Tread lightly.

I own a 216570 and it’s a fantastic watch. Yes, that is a great deal. Assuming it is authentic, I would not hesitate to buy it at that price.

That's way under market assuming it is authentic and in reasonable shape.

Better deal than you'll find anywhere. Even if it's a family friend I'd make sure that everything is 100% legit.

This sounds well dodgy. I would want it sent to a RSC for a service in advance of parting with any money.

About $4K below market… great deal. But I’d thread lightly.

Welcome to the forum, and soon to be the Rolex “club”.

I think the friend may be discounting a bit since he knows you are facing a $850-1,000 overhaul cost within a short period of time.

But that is still a good deal - if and only if - the friend bought it from an Authorized Dealer. Otherwise, if he got it on secondary market, your friend may have a super replica - that would be a caution flag to me.

You can access a chart called Rolex pricing over the years (or something like that). If I can find it, I’ll post a link in a future edit. **

The Expl. II will be on it and you can see what the original price would have been.

** Edit: the TRF thread is at > https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=756249 and it directs readers to the source at > https://www.minus4plus6.com/PriceEvolution.php

It was over $8K new…

Thanks all. It has been sitting and not worn for quite awhile and wondering if servicing does in fact need to be done? And if 500-1000 would be in the ballpark?

Not unless it is running poorly or you just want to start out fresh.

A cheap shop might charge 500, but that would not be the price at a repair shop that will do the job right. Rolex authorized service shops would start at 850so know where and who is doing the work.

216570 is a great watch but the price does scream to good to be true. Please be careful.

Perhaps spring for Rolex Service and if it passes muster buy it. Would be a great buy.

Grey dealers are paying $7500 all day long for this watch and then reselling for $10k+.

Something doesn't smell right here, unless your friend just wants to throw away thousands of dollars. Can you share some pics and more info on the watch?

People tend to be cynics, but if this friend is someone you know well, who is financially well-off, with a bigger collection.... he may have simply been giving you a good deal. This is not totally unheard of. Yes, he could have gotten more money selling it privately to someone, but he may honestly not be trying to eke out every last dollar of worth.

I've "sold" watches to friends for MUCH less than they are worth. Hell I've "sold" an automatic Mido chronograph to a friend for $1. Granted, it's only ever been sub-$1k watches, because I am not that well off, but not everyone is looking for a payday when thinning their collection or passing a watch on. He could just have been doing you a solid.

That being said, if he's NOT as close of a friend as I am assuming, or there's anything else fishy, then it doesn't hurt to get the watch checked out. It would take a real scum bag to knowingly swindle a "friend" for $5k with a fake watch, or he may not have known it to be fake. But, in the latter case, if he doesn't know it's fake, then the situation is the same as if it were real... he's just being a bro and trying to give you a deal.

Yeah, that’s exactly what this was. A friendly fair price.

Tried attaching a photo but it won’t let me. The jeweler checks out and so does the other hand written warranty info. It’s beautiful and keeps time well so I’ve elected to not get it serviced at this time. Unless someone can provide insight on any reason to have it done.

OP, sounds like you know this guy well enough to trust that the watch is legit, so, at that price, grab it!
