I may be in the minority here as it seems the release has been well received on this forum.

Low WR and lack of micro-adjustment on the 222 are not deal breakers for me. It's just the matte finished dial is very underwhelming, at least in pics. I wished they used either solid lacquer or some texture (grain finished) on the dial.

16202 feels and handles like an upscale or finely finished version of regular 37/41mm Royal Oaks and it reflects in the few $k price premium set by AP. On the other hand, it is the reverse with VC. At least in steel, Overseas 4520 blue feels the more upscale and better finished product compared to 222. With 4520, the dial is joy to look at, the movement looks more interesting (to my eyes), and bracelet is finished to a slightly higher standard (or maybe not) with strap change option.

But that’s a 16202BC. That ain’t a fair comparison LOL.
I think they can co-exist. It does not have to be a one or the other kind of situation. I’m sure a lot of people on TRF will eventually have both in some sort of combination.
Personally, I think the new 222 is a great release. I like the colour of the dial. I like that it’s not crazy huge like the Cubitus, especially at a time where watches are coming back to sensible sizes. I think 50m water resistance is not ideal, but I don’t really wear the watch to swim or bath with them.
I see a lot of upside to the release. People keep saying it’s a PRX homage etc, but 222 was released in 1976, and the new iteration is almost a carbon copy of it, with a new movement and clear case back. How can the 222 be a homage to the PRX when it already existed almost 50 years ago?

Great side by sides, thanks.

Any single one of these would be a dream ….. if I “had” to have two , I would take that RO with the YG 222. :-)

The 222 wears like a 39 like the 16202...so don't be afraid of the 37mm size

The blue dials on both are underwhelming to me.

I don't like either of those dials, but the Royal Oak would be my choice.

In reality though, I'd probably not buy either and get a Parmigiani Annual Calendar Tonda.

I dont get the 222 hype.
Overpriced and not well finished.
Any oversea over any 222. And of course any AP over 222

I respect the VCs and would love to have one but AP beats them at every watch in my eyes.

In your shoes I would go for the Audemars Piguet. This choice will likely require a lot of thought (and visits to the AD) to be certain. Ultimately, yet another win-win situation but my vote as aforementioned would be for the Audemars Piguet.

I like the AP way more than the VC. The AP would definitely be my choice.

I like this specific AP a lot more, which is a bit strange because I can’t stand a lot of what AP does or just their vibe as a brand these days. Much prefer VC in that regard, but that specific AP is hot.

I attire the 16202 but I’ll take the VC please.

I will go VC as AP doesn’t suit me any longer as just not a fan of the brand. VC is classy in my eyes and love that they fly under the radar. I appreciate their watches especially the Historiques collection. So for me give me the SS 222 over the 16202 without hesitation.

16202 all day for me. The 222 is nice, but not a must have for me.

Agree. I still like the new 222 and will reserve judgement till I can handle one in person.

I share your sentiments. I’ve been trying to get hyped up about this historical re-release, but the realities of its aesthetics that you highlight leave me a little flat. Of course, I recognize that this is true to the original, so I can’t hold that against it. However, the Overseas line is more my liking.

i just don't see any reason to get the 222 over a 16202. great looking watch but i just feel like the 16202 is much more special

That AP dial is one of my favorites and I am in a bit of an AP obsession mode lately so not a fair fight with me. But I do really like the VC 222. My only complaint on the VC is the white date wheel. Same thing I noticed with the Overseas. The gold 222 looks great on you so I vote you buy that next. Always fun spending others money I am assuming you own the AP and you were trying on the 222?

I like many VC offerings but given the choice between these two I’m grabbing the jumbo lighting fast.

Looking at them side by side I’d get the 222.

For that much money they should have done a lot more.

I might be interested when this thing is a few years in and the grey market price is half retail

Grey dial 222 like original would be much better. Blue to blue 16202 is absolute king.

Another one I would strongly consider and is my favorite integrated bracelet sports watch is the Laurent Ferrier Sport Auto. It is titanium and the quality is second to none. As an owner of both 5711 and 15202, I think the LF trumps both. The look, feel and finish is amazing. I will add I am also quite looking forward to getting the SS 222 as well.

I tried the LF twice this year. Being titainum felt so cheap imo

Dont like at all. Infact the iwc ingineur is far ahead (even with the titanium ). Thats about feel and looks. Not discussing the movement
