Hi folks - today I attended an auction where this Comex went under the hammer for £19,500 & 24% auction fee.......it was listed as a 5514 dating from 1974.

Apologies for the lack of decent pics - but from the one shown we surmise that the dial is not from 1974. Can anybody more knowledgeable than me comment on the dial please......is it a legit service dial? I'm here to learn, thank you in advance.

The McTears auction watch appeared to be quite authentic.

The watch was fitted with a genuine Rolex-Comex logo service dial and hands, the bezel insert, crystal and bracelet were also service replacements.

The Comex issue number on the casebook had worn away (on this batch, the issue number is relatively lightly engraved).

The price was "cheap" as the auction house is not as accessible as the "big boys", but it wasn't far off the mark for a Comex watch in this presentation.

I think its 20% VAT and 4% auctioneers fee.....VAT is our UK sales tax.

It’s 20% auctioneers fee with 20% VAT on that fee so 24% total. There is no VAT on the actual hammer price except in a few circumstances.

25+% is now the norm. What bugs me in the uk is most houses now charge 4 or 5% extra on top if you bid live on line, so on a bid price, you have to factor 30% plus vat.

Therefore, a hammer price of £100 can cost the buyer £136 and the seller in most cases would get around £80. £56 cream!
