Help identifying vintage Rolex
Hi all,
Was at the local market today and came across the "Prince-esque" vintage Rolex and was wondering if anyone might be able to shed more light on it? Curious about the model so I can try to find out more information about it and if it's authentic. It ran quite well and though the crown was a bit bent out, it turned well and the hands were smooth in changing the time. Sorry for the bad dial photos, I had a bad focus from my mobile and didn't noticed till after the fact. Also, since my post count is low, I had to manual attach the photos and compress them pretty badly to get it on here. Hoping you can still get a feel of it from the layout of the dial. Cheers |

I can't find that case in Dowling/Hess but that doesn't mean it's not genuine, Rolex contracted out cases back then. You'd have to get the back off to see what movement is in there but...lots of things say "Rolex" on them that aren't truly Rolex.

It may just be a boutique case where a Rolex movement was dropped into it. Hard to tell without opening it up. There will be a lot of info under the movement inside that case.

Wow, the case on that drake is spot on. I found the watch in a weekly market in town, but it belongs to a local antique store. I'll try to see if I can get pictures of the movement from them (they did mention getting the watch serviced by their watchmaker) to get down to the bottom of this mystery...

Case looks to be from the 1930's.
I do not see in wear through, so good chance that it has a solid gold case. Appears to be authentic, but as mentioned the case and movement should be looked at, to determine for sure. Pretty easy to open and remove movement, case appears to be hinged. Rolex probably made over a hundred different dress watch variations during this period. None of which are desirable other than the Prince that I am aware of. |

Just noticed the price tag. 9 carat gold, Australian (I assume cased) for $500. As is. Rolex sent uncased movements to some countries so, this is probably correct.
I would say worth the money if the movement is signed Rolex. But as is, either you better have a good watch repairman, or plan on reselling it for a little profit. As I mentioned previously, not a desirable watch. But, there is usually someone in the market for a cheap Rolex. |
