5070 vs 5170
In the market for a chronograph and as much as I enjoy ALS, I’ve decided to stay with Patek only. This brings me naturally to the 5170 which is absolutely gorgeous. Given I have a 5130R in Rose Gold, I would likely obtain the white gold or yellow gold. I also love the black dial look which is exquisite and a bit more modern and youthful in appearance. In researching the 5170 I discovered the 5070, it’s predecessor and also lovely in appearance. What is attractinnkento the 5070 is the larger 42mm case as opposed to the 5170’s 39mm case. The primary reason I bought the 5130 as opposed to the newer 5230 is specifically because of the larger case and I’d likely do the same, choosing the older 5070 over a new 5170. What are everyone’s thoughts on the 5070 vs the 5170? I know there are several 5170 owners on here but does anyone own or owned a 5070 and can share their experience? Wrist pics of the 5070’s large 42mm case would also be appreciated! I think a 42mm 5070 with a black dial would be a real avant garde interpretation of an otherwise classic Patek chronograph.

My pick would be 5070G, if your wrist size could pull it off......

I'm a big fan of the 5170...lots of options on secondary market, still some options for new ones at ADs if you look hard enough.
...and I must say the 5172G-001 is growing on me. |

Oh wow, wasn’t even aware of the 5172 and the 41mm size is very palatable. Is there a black dial variant?

not to my knowledge, but the dial color is much darker than the Patek photo on the website in person... here is a better photo representation...I'm trying to get over the "art-deco" lugs.

5070G with a blue alligator strap. Wouldn't even consider anything else (well the P version if you have the means). But best bang for buck has to be the white gold variant with the white dial

I would personally take any 5070 over any non platinum 5170.
I would actually take the Lange 1815 chrono over the 5170 non platinum. As for 5070p versus 5170p- I would give the slight edge to the 5070p but it costs twice as much. The 5170p is something special though. The yellow gold 5070 with black dial is so quirky and unique - I love it! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I’ve had a number of each. I agree with bearxj86...I prefer all of the 5070s to the non platinum 5170s. I’m happy with my collection now...a 5070g and 5170p. I’d love to own a 5070p or 5070j in addition to what I have someday

5170P > 5070G or J or R. But if against 5070P, that's tough, probably slight edge to 5070P but I think the price is too hard to stomach. I fancy owning a 5070G too. They have such magnificent wrist presence.

If money were no object, 5070P. Serious wrist presence, also probably continue to go up in value. 5070G comes in a close second.

I really wanted to love the 5070, but after trying it on, it just didn’t feel/look right on my 16.5cm wrist. If your wrist can take it, I would go with the 5070g, very cool and good value. If not, 5170 pulsation dial.

I would take the 5172 over any/all the others. And I really like those pump pushers.
