Protection film for watches

Just a thought... if you can wrap an entire car in matte or gloss paint protection film why doesn’t anyone do it for watches?

Would anyone opt for this if it was pretty much invisible and covered every link, clasp and watch case?

I remain tempted to buy those film protectors just for my bracelet clasp. They're terribly overpriced though

I'm the crazy guy that does this. Buy a few feet of that film on Amazon and cover the clasp. Its invisible and in 2 years it will be good as new.

I am one of the few who do it on the clasps. Why not? It is extra protection and hardly noticeable.

Thankful to be able to wear the watches and enjoy them, wear marks and all.

If your watch comes into contact with a door handle, sharp object, or anything more than what would cause a hairline, it’s going through that thin plastic film anyway.

no way. if you are paranoid about marks on the clasp, spend the $10 on some polishing pads and learn to touch up the bracelet a couple of times a year.

The thing with cars is you’re covering a large object, and it’s very unlikely someone will inspect it at a close range. If you know what you’re looking for, you’ll easily find the wrapped edges, stress relief cuts, etc.

Watches are handled at a much closer range, so you’ll be able to notice the film much easier. Not to mention, I’ve seen photos of entire watches covered in film and it’s incredibly obvious. The film adds sheen to areas it’s not supposed to be and also most films have an orange peel effect. There will also be dirt built up along the edges said film overtime.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with covering the clasp given it’s a high impact area, but if you’re going to do the whole thing then consider the above before doing so. The kits that are installed poorly bother me. In the end, you should what do what feel will give you the most enjoyment.

I've been seeing these threads for months now and each time I think it's overboard. Do we want our watch to stay nice, sure, but hell let's take a look at where each model stemmed from and if that environment was designed to keep it prestine:

Sub: diving and swimming in salt water...which is oh so friendly to metal.
Deepsea: Same bloody principle just much deeper
Milgauss: Got its roots in science labs. Nothing ridiculous could ever happen here.
GMT: Planes & jet fighters.
Explorer: Climbing mounts & bloody spelunking for heavens sake.

Bottom line - these are NOT the safest of places which means that the watch was purpose built to be tough, get scratches on it and still come out on top.

Wear the watch and stop worrying about how pretty it is. Save that for your vain friends or your wife's concern over her nails.

I say go for it if it increases your enjoyment of the watch. I'd recommend not mentioning it to the forum, as this idea seems to draw considerable ridicule - not that the opinion of strangers on the internet matters.

just get a bubble suit to cover your body as well....that way you don't get sick or get bruises or worry about bumping into anything...as for travel..uber in a truck or just stay home you might have a wreck...gosh...what if your place explodes because of gas or fire...ohh get a fireproof bubble suit...and what happens if the suit get recalled..gosh…!!!!

Yes true but some of us prefer not to damage our bracelets and cases. Five years from now you’re Rolex will look like it was dragged on the pavement mine will still look pristine. That’s my preference.

I do the same thing. I have the CHNR with the rose gold clasp and it is really susceptible to minute scratches. I just cover the middle of the clasp and it is not noticeable at all. When it gets dirty or starts unpeeling I put a new one on. East peace of mind.

I'll admit I'm pretty OCD. The best solution I've found is on the OF clasps, there is some "OEM" Rolex heavy stickering on the clasp beneath the plastic wrap. (the full bracelets don't have it). So I just leave that there, doesn't peel or anything.

For the full bracelets...well...I just buy a whole extra bracelet that's 100% pristine. It actually never gets worn and just sits in the safe, but sooths my OCD knowing I can always swap out to a brand new part. The cases never have an issue for me personally unless I run into a door (known to happen), but usually quite rare, and the watch does more damage to the wood trim of the door than the other way around. ha.
