Why Don't People Wear Their Watch to the Gym?

I often read here that people only take off their watch when showering and when going to the gym. I understand why people take their watch off when showering but not when going to the gym. Why is this, and what are the particular risks involved?

personally I wear all my rolex to the gym.
I think some people are just more sensitive to the thought of scratches when lifting dumbbells and other equipment.
To each their own, right?

One thing I will never do is put my watch in the locker. Had a friend who lost his watch as a result of a break in - and it was in a higher end gym.

I'll either wear my watch at the gym or leave it at home and take my apple watch instead. Not worth the risk to me.

I wear my Pelagos at the gym sometimes, but it gets very uncomfortable quickly (even with the spring-loaded clasp mode on), especially on arm day when your arms get all bloated from dat pump. The watch feels disgusting after the session, forcing me to rinse it with water.

I guess most people also tend to avoid wearing their watches to the gym as there is a big risk of scratching it, plus the risk of any severe jerking motions that might upset the movement.

I don't wear any jewelry to the gym. I just don't enjoy the feeling of having it on while sweating.

I wear an Apple Watch as well. When doing certain exercises, I.e. dumb bell press or tricep cable extensions, the dumb bell or the rope will sometimes come into contact with whatever is on my wrist. I just don’t want to risk unnecessary damage. I’d much rather my Apple Watch take any hits. And the timer and calories burned features of the Apple Watch are very useful.

I wear one on each arm and each leg. The weight of the gold helps me balance.

I wear my watch at the gym as I wouldn’t want to leave it in the locker. No problems so far and unless I spontaneously fly off the treadmill, or inexplicably lose my coordination around the weights, I can’t imagine what harm could occur.

I'm sure the watch can handle it, but it's just not comfortable when working out, don't want any sort of jewelry on when exercising/sweating/pushing/pulling/etc.

Daytona is in the rotation for this week. It goes to the gym with me just like the rest of them do.

Gyms are not high-risk like they used to be.

No watch, no ring. I don't like the feeling when working out. Especially the ring.

WHAT????

You can actually lift those things.

I always go right past those medieval things and head to the Pilates room.

I wear my watch in the gym, on the tennis court, on a run, swimming, etc. That's why I like Rolex watches - they are durable enough to handle sports, even fancy Day-Dates.

Because those watches are not designed to be worn at a gym. A bracelet is too rigid for gym activities.
That's hwy there is a specialized category of watches that are designed specifically for sports.
I use a Garmin Fenix series for all my sports activities.

When exercising the last thing I want to think about is not to damage my 10k watch with an arm swing.

Prefer to just leave it at home. I swim in the mornings which isn't even a second thought.

I am currently wearing my BLNR to the resort gym as I lift weights on vacation. I dont like it as I am a heavy free lifter at home. I dont like to be bothered with a watch when lifting heavy weights but can deal with it while on vacation. I also wrap my wrist and finish my work out on the heavy bag which will destroy any automatic watch.. That said, I have my own gym in my home so travelling is only when its a issue.

Crazy idea. Wearing such a valuable and mechanical watch at the gym is just asking for getting a damage accidentally, plus excessive wear and pressure on the lug bars and movement parts especially rotor and clutch.
And why would you need your Rolex when you already know that you will be spending about 60 minutes there. Most gyms have clock on the wall.
Plus wearing a Rolex at the gym will make people stare at it, or maybe they will approach and want to know you and your life better which will be annoying.

I had an OP at the gym this morning, lifted some weights and swam laps for about 30 mins. The pool is an excellent watch winder, fyi.

I find a steel bracelet watch uncomfortable while working out. Flexing the wrist, bending the wrist is just unpleasant. For me, the watch gets in the way for most movements. The only thing I could see it being okay for is some cardio.

However, I'd rather wear it than leave it in the locker for some hooligan to break in and steal.

I always wear my watch in the gym. Safer on my arm than in the parking lot or in the locker. The exception is on weekends, when I'm leaving and returning home, I may leave it off to avoid all of the perspiration.

I've had cash stolen out of my locker in another gym, and in the current one, the lockers are quite stout but there is one where someone literally pulled the entire latch out to get into it. Don't know if it was theft or they just forgot the combination, but obviously a lot of strong people there, and ain't nothin' gonna stop 'em if they want to get in.

I have never dinged, marked or damaged a watch in a gym by hitting it with weights, machines or anything else. My office is probably more dangerous.

Neither has ever happened to me. Which was annoying, back in my single days.

Light weight, flexible, digital G-Shocks or Fitbits for me at gym, without fail.

1). Comfort factor.
Metal bracelets/heavier watches aren’t comfortable at all for me when free-weight training/doing Olympic lifts/high-intensity functional complex’s/calisthenics.

2). Technology.
I prefer a digital stopwatch feature to time between sets; the ability to split time laps, etc.
