AD says case back is engraved

Just got a call from my ad asking if I wanted my case back to be polished in order to have an “illegible” engraving fully removed. However my case back does not have an engraving. When I put my watch down I set it on top of the bracelet, so maybe they are talking about those scratches.

Has anyone else got this call before?

I'd check back with the AD to clarify.

I think you’re probably right about those scratches coming from the bracelet

Sounds like they think there is some kind of engraving that you might want to keep. That actually sounds like pretty good service.

Does illegible imply that they have tried to read it?

Perhaps the AD has never seen the caseback of a modern tudor.....jk

The employee who called me said that It was illegible, so they must have tried. Not sure how they planned on reading scratches though.

Weird how in todays technology they can't send you a picture of what they are referring to as "engraving". But I guess you know you don't have any engraving on the caseback to begin with, so polish away.

Seems like a quick conversation could resolve this.

Maybe they are looking at the wrong watch.
You should call.

Update : called and told them to go ahead and polish it. If the engraving they are talking about is there, I don’t want it. Thanks for the guidance!

As a matter of interest, did you seek clarification of the details of the “engraving” the AD was referring to?

Yep. Turns out it was just a couple scratches. Don't really know why they classified it as an engraving at first. Just happy they called to make sure.

Do you have a picture of the caseback? Not that I don’t believe you, but I’d like to try and see what they are seeing

Unfortunately I do not. I kind of want to see what they were talking about too

Seems like a phone call would have been more productive than posting.

Oftentimes, watchmakers will engrave notes on the inside of the case back, indicating the date and type of service performed. Is it possible the watch was previously serviced by an independent watchmaker who may have made such engravings on the inside of the case back?

Imagine it was another person's watch and there was a mixup?

Dude. It could be an apparition of Paul Newman. Or the face of Mr. Wilsdorf Himself!
