Watch Sizes Rolex too
Following a few post of the past and recent IMHO 36mm is just right for most people. Not until lately (1990’s) this was the normal size of a mans watch or 34mm. Only after Paneria came on the scene have men’s watches grown in size so dramatically. Have wrist sizes around the world really grown
so big or has fashion and the new social media culture (look at me sydrome) played a part in the size of watches today? My own thoughts on Rolex watches are: Sports 40mm XL wrist 42-44mm Normal wrist 36-38mm Small wrist 34mm. Then again I do believe the super case 40mm sports models will become classics in their own right because of their instant distinction, down the road. Furthermore, becoming highly sought after with the next set of Rolex collectors. A very subjective topic. Love to hear the forums thoughts.

I like to wear watches from 36-42mm on my about 7in wrist.
Depends on the vibe i’m going for. I don’t just prefer 1 size. |

I would just like to point out that the ‘90s were 20-30 years ago. The emphasis on larger watch sizes is really not new. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Sometimes more about how one carries oneself. I’ve come mostly full circle wearing mostly my smallish Daytona and 40mm BLRO. But I always thought the 44-47mm Panerais I had also looked great. I still have and wear some watches up to around 44, nothing as small as 36.

My two cents. I prefer 36-40 and I think SOME 42s look okay, anything bigger than that unless you are a giant looks silly to me

So for me, I think 40mm is the perfect size for sport models and anything 34mm to 39mm for dress.
That said, I have a small wrist size!! Cheers, Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

IMHO it depends mostly on the brand, then maybe your wrist size.
I wear 40 mm Rolex when I want a classic size. I've tried their larger divers and they just don't suit me from a comfort standpoint. YMMV I wear this 47mm Panerai as its classic for the brand. Its also more comfortable to me than the larger Rolex references. Both look good on a 7" wrist IMO Sent from my SM-G960W using Tapatalk Attachment 1194190Attachment 1194191 |

For me a watch needs to be proportional to a wrist size, and comfortable above all else. I do have slender wrist (6.5") I have owned 42mm size watches but there lug length is usually to long or the watch sits to high. 36 mm Rolex and Tudor suits me just fine. I almost laugh when I see someone with a large watch strapped to dis-proportional wrist size. Reminds me of a Big Ben clock with straps on it. When a watch fits right, It looks right for whom ever is wearing it. A hub cap strapped to a wrist just looks silly IMO.

Though I have a small 6.5" wrist I prefer watches with a case around 39 - 40 mm.
Looking at formal dress watches I would choose case size 37 - 38.5 mm (PP Calatrava, ALG Saxonia & 1815 or VC Traditionnelle). For an elegant watch I like those with a real measure case just below 40 (Day-Date 40 or Datejust 41). For sporty watches my preference is 39 - 41 mm cases (Daytona, Sub, GMT, YM). As only one exception I like Panerai Luminor 44 mm. Despite a lot of watch lovers considering the DJ 36 mm case the perfect one, I always see it too small for my taste. |

I like'm larger. My smallest is 44mm only because the larger watches look normal on my larger wrist!

Size isn't everything. Something with thin lugs and the merest hint of an inward curve can make another design with a smaller case size look huge. 40-42mm seems to be my Rolex optimum range. But I can go 45mm with my Speedmaster X-33 and it still looks diminutive next to my 42mm Polar or Sky Dwellers.
My wife can rock anything from 34mm to 45mm. She likes a 38-40mm Rolex and a loose fit. Everything looks good on her. |

I like 39mm-43mm. My wrist is 7.1" and I prefer the larger wrist presence.

Rolex watches have a rather large lug to lug sizes. Some with beefy bezels (on sports models) and sculpted beauty lines in the case and bracelets which all add scale and depth to a rather average face diameter. If you went any bigger (43,44,45+) you will end up with a Panerai Radiomir (old school Rolex oyster design) or IWC Portuguese where its a large dial with a small bezels. Im sure Rolex could do it, and do it well. But it would be such a black sheep in the product line which is way outside their business model. And it could cannibalize their other models. |

I find 36mm to be far too small, hardly even a woman’s size watch these days.
40mm is minimum and ideally 42mm for a mans watch in my opinion

I prefer 36mm-40mm on my 7 1/2 wrist. In fact, my 36mm DateJust gets more wrist time than my SS Submariner Date.

Just look at nowdays movies... guys being called "Fat Tony" 30-40 years ago now are just your average Tony, slim girls are almost non-existent... so wrist sizes have not increased, they are the same but with more fat on top.
There is a channel on youtube by David Hoffman (https://youtube.com/c/DavidHoffman), you can see how fat people have become if you compare current day NY footages with the ones from 70s-90s. Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk |

I just think that there are more choices these days, I have a 7" wrist and a 36 DJ would be perfect although I wear a SD4K majority of the time.
34" feels too small for me and a 42" Speedmaster is my limit. The 5 digit subs are a great fit as I'm guessing the BB58 would be too. Each to their own, but I have learnt that some watches look a lot better on someone else's wrist than they do on mine. |

There's a reason why watchsizes have increased and it has to do with watches becoming more of a jewelry/accessory item, rather than actual timepieces (most people use their phones for that).
With watches now being jewelry they are used much more as status symbols. What good is a status symbol if it's only 34mm? Look at AP's, Hublot's, Jacob's, RM's etc.. there's a very good reason why most of these are 42+mm, very oversized and why customers are buying them. In most cases it's certainly not for the deep history and passion for the brands. Of course the above doesn't apply to anyone in here. |

To me the main thing is proportions, and so many brands miss the mark. Watches must be slim somehow, and yet Grand Seiko, Omega and other are content with making them extra thicc and ruin the design for me. Just look at the current Royal Oak and the original Extra slim one. The latter is so much more interesting, and it seems the trend of thicc watch is merely a way to save cost.
