Dont forget the essence of what Rolex is about : Perpetual

Forget rolex.com a bit and study https://www.rolex.org/

When you buy a Rolex from an AD,you make a contribution .
Contributions to very worthwhile causes .
Contributions to the human spirit.
Perpetual .

I quote the following :

" Our finding spirit

Perpetual is more than a word on a dial.
Perpetual. For nearly a century the word has been on every Rolex Oyster watch.
But Perpetual is more than a word on a dial .
It is a philosophy- an unceasing quest for excellence,to explore and to share human knowledge to build a better world.

It is based on a fundamental belief in unlimited human potential,in continued improvement,in always pushing the boundaries and taking the long term view.
Our watches are built to last.So is our contribution to future generations . "

The foundation is giving grants and has helped somebody I know in my city. She had a very rough childhood and they paid for her whole scholarship.

Really neat.

Thanks for sharing.
A few of my students are into watches. This should inspire them about the other aspect of Rolex.

It's all about health, happiness & family. The rest are just necessary inconveniences we have to deal with.

Hans Wilsdorf was a ground breaking individual in many ways. His legacy lives on. I'm sure he would be astounded with the generational success of his creation and very proud. Long live Rolex!

Well, perpetual is also the amount of time you wait on the list, before you eventually lose interest

If my wife complains about the cost of the next Rolex or Tudor I will remind her it was for charity.

Don’t fall into the spell of Rolex marketing. Their pockets are full before being the altruistic company they would want you to believe

That's allowed. It is better than full pockets and no charity.

That's not right. Handwinding (i.e. non-"Perpetual" dialled) Oysters were in the Rolex catalog till the end of the 1980s.

In todays market perpetual on the dial, its just Rolex speak for being automatic winding, but Perrelet invented the first self winding mechanism around 1770,later Breguet improved it and called his winding system perpetuelles. So perhaps this is where Rolex got the idea to call there automatics Perpetual. But it was a guy called John Harwood from the Isle of Man UK, he in 1923 took out a UK/World patent for the first truly automatic winding wrist watch. And he went on with backing to produce many thousands of these watches, but mainly owing to the very hard industrial depression in the mid 1920s to 1930s in the UK he went broke and out of business .Now old Hans Wilsdorf of Rolex being a very clever but very shrewd man bought and took up this auto-winding patent for the Rolex Watch Company, and in the very early 1930s incorporated it into the oyster design case the rest is history of the RWC over the years..

And yes Rolex does some wonderful work and very good at marketing but Rolex is a foundation and cannot be owned, bought or sold to anyone for any price. The company is set up in such a way that it continuously perpetuates its existence through properly allocated funds into research and development but they do still make a large profit just like any other business to survive.

Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis the founders of Rolex,Hans Wilsdorf was orphaned at age 12,he spent the rest of his teenager years in an orphanage. He later began to work for a watch exporter in Switzerland, then went on to found RWC now just Rolex as we know it today.

Hans Wilsdorf and his wife owned orphanages in Switzerland and donated profits of the company to various charities and orphanages. To this day a large share of the profits go to charities and the Rolex Awards for Enterprise but they still make a profit .
