Will the 228235 Olive Dial get to John Mayer status?

Yes, perhaps this is a reach. But the climb seems real. Crazy to see these going for almost $50k in Europe and there’s a 2016 example by one of the most trusted sellers at $46.5k. Not to mention one that sold in an hour and a half at $46.8k. Not sure if some people know something everybody else doesn’t but it’s interesting nonetheless. Is there speculation they will discontinue this dial?

Not necessarily a collector’s piece for another 30+ years methinks.

But, as with other models having a green dial, they aren’t as prevalent as champagne or other colors. So they do fetch a premium.

I think that aspect will continue for years to come - and certainly one day the dial color could be retired.

46.5 is actually less than msrp plus tax in many states so id say it’s not there. But I would say it’s a much nicer piece. I had the WG version and quite enjoyed it. Think I paid 33k new from DSW.

You’re right I’m an idiot. Rolex selects the baguette dial automatically on the website and I didn’t even think twice

Have to agree but today many buy the hype just to wear the hype.

I have no idea who John Mayer is and so rather fortuitously am totally unaffected by what he thinks.

LOL

I wonder sometimes if ppl buy watches because they ACTUALLY like them.

Who cares what John Mayer thinks. Only person that matters if yourself. And if you like it who cares what happens to it.

He’s a musician and some would say guitar virtuoso. He’s also a watch collector.

I work in the same basic industry as John and he’s a force with whatever he gets into, look how he has influenced Paul at prs adopting the strat shape. Must be a super cool dude, he comes through my work but I have never met him

My issue with the watch is twofold. The olive dial just isn’t green enough and the rose gold is just too coppery on the day date.

I tried on the model with the diamond bezel just last week and it seemed a little feminine as well. This obviously wasn’t the case with the non diamond dial version.

The 116718 GMT II had the 50th anniversary green dial introduced in 2005. Rolex discontinued it in 2019 so that gives it a 14 year production run. Despite the long run, I don’t think many were sold compared it to counterparts.

I think the 228235 RG w/ olive will gain a strong demand especially when the dial is discontinued, but not sure if it’ll be as strong as the green Daytona being it’s not a professional/sport model. I have my doubts they’ll keep this 228235 dial around as long as the 116718, but that’s just my own opinion.

I don't think so. It seems he's more of a sports watch type guy, from what I've read.

But anyway, there are watches that generate their own followings strictly based on their merits. As a matter of fact, I would venture a guess the majority of coveted watches fall into this category, the RG DD being one of them.

Yeah I wasn’t even suggesting anything related to John Mayer. Just comparing the two watches.
