Hi everyone,

For those who flip watches, I heard that ADs find out when you flip and blacklist you. How do they find out if you sell the watch?

They monitor FB, watch forums (like this), and other online marketplaces. In a couple of months, they will invite you back into the store. If you aren’t wearing the piece you purchased, red flag. If they think you’ve sold the watch, you won’t be offered anything desirable again.

Some dealers (and, yes, this absolutely happens) will hold onto the warranty card for a couple of months to discourage your flipping it.

I was told this:

If the buyer brings the watch to their local AD to have it validated, the AD will contact Rolex and Rolex will contact the original selling AD to confirm.

I just got a sub from a great AD and it was probably based on the fact that I was not a dealer nor flipper. However, it's damn tempting when you look at the numbers! I will not go back on my word, though.

I think this is a big one. If you want to develop a “relationship” with an AD, you pretty much have to visit from time to time. And if you’re never wearing the [insert desirable piece that sells well over MSRP], they will (rightly or wrongly) probably suspect that you flipped it. If they do suspect, it doesn’t really matter what the truth is. You won’t be getting anything more from them.

I thanked my AD just over two years ago when picking up my BLNR and assured him I'm not a flipper in so many words and he said if you do decide to sell it just don't advertise the serial no. on social media. I still have it and come to think of it I've never sold a Rolex, only made deals to trade back in.

I’m not into flipping for money but I don’t think I would want more than 3 to 4 pieces and if I want something in the future I’d probably have to trade in an older watch or sell it and use the cash so I was wondering.

Inconsiderate to cheat someone who really wants and has waited for their desired model only to have someone like the OP buy it and flip it for money. I’m not going to say here what I think of a person who does this but I hope such a person is prevented from doing it more than once...

Lots of different ADs out there, lots of different things they do. No single method.

And this is the real reason behind Rolex limiting availability...if they didn’t the ADs would not have time to carry out the post-sale surveillance on customers - incidentally this is required as part of the ADs’ agreement with Rolex.

In the UK, the largest group here has a "register of concern" where potential resellers/flippers are listed.

I have “INVESTED” if you will...fairly strongly with My AD.
He’s a great guy..dealt with him for years.
I’m not a flipper,but do have a couple watches I am thinking about selling...(I didn’t buy from him) He’s told me the same story as above: Rolex began a new warranty registration program. When they sell ANY new Rolex,they have a dedicated device (iPhone from his suggestion) and its used EXCLUSIVELY for scanning the QR code,and all the buyers information.
Before you leave the shop,it’s uploaded to Rolex.
And that “if any of these watches pop up on the grey market,if serial numbers are visible theyre checked by Rolex..and the AD Is notified. As for “preferred client” status..Youre instantly done.
And he also said that if one is ever brought to an AD It’s in fact checked in the system. Also theft...if a Rolex is stolen and you report yo the AD,it’ll notify AD it’s stolen watch.
And yes. He said Rolex absolutely monitors these forums and sales sites.
I had a Batgirl if bought from another AD in town. (His competition)
And I wanted to buy a coupe of hot sports models he offers up.
We worked a deal,and he paid me full retail on what I paid for the batgirl.
Did I “give him” a few grand in profit?
Yes. We discussed in detail what they sell for online.
However...I traded to him.
HE HAS TAKEN INCREDIBLY GOOD CARE OF ME Since then.
I’ve received phone calls for some of THE HOTTEST models available.
To me,not worth flipping if you have a good relationship or expect to begin one.
I’m not ruining mine..and not going back on my word to not flip anything hes kindly offered to Me.

Ad's want it both ways. They want to string you out and play the game that they hold all the cards. I have seen whales buy from AD's and then immediately flip or sell and the AD's do nothing about it. This is based on the fact the whales are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars a year with them. I say ok, their game and their ball, but the watches are mine and I will do what ever I want with my property. The biggest problem with distribution is not the Grey's or Rolex but the AD's holding back watches and not selling them as they come in to customers in the case. At some point the script will get flipped and we will see.

They are watching you, your internet, your mobile, your browsing history.
