Day date 40 - RG or WG?

Morning all,
I’m in a dilemma, a good dilemma! I’ve been offered both the RG and WG day date 40 with olive dial from my AD. But I can’t decide! The WG is classically understated and those who know, know! The RG is extremely popular at the moment and is beautiful and has a little more wrist presence.
I have never sold a watch from my collection and never intend to, but which piece a) do people prefer ( and I know it’s my choice, but looking for opinion) and b) which do people think would be the “best” long term hold ( again, fully aware property/ stocks etc offer a better return and I probably won’t ever let it go- just want opinion!)
Thanks a lot!

I'd go rose gold w/ olive personally. The white gold is extremely nice but the RG variant works so much better in my eyes.

I had this same dilemma but I ended up choosing the WG. Simple reason in the end is that whilst the RG and olive is a stunning combo and I could “drool” all day looking at it, I simply wouldn’t be able to wear it as much as the WG from a stealth perspective.

That said, I’ve recently been having withdrawal symptoms and say to myself, “should’ve gone for the RG”. Maybe I only say that to myself as I’m not wearing my DD40 as often but I’m sure that’ll change soon as the world starts to return to normal and the others in the collection will get more wear time.

Personally, if you’re able to throw both on your wrist then do that and glance at your wrist a few times in the mirror and decide which version of yourself you prefer...the one that has something obviously valuable on their wrist or the one that could pass of for a very nice SS looking watch. In the end it doesn’t matter what others think as you’ll always know what’s on your wrist.

Resale, yes the RG does seem to be doing better than the WG but in many years to come, RG may not be as “hot” to wear but WG I think will always be neutral enough to both males and females!

Good luck with your decision and would love to know which way you went in the end

RG works very nicely with the olive in my opinion.

I went for the WG Olive as I have pale skin and I don't think RG looks good on me.

The RG seems to be the 'hotter' piece but I'm not interested in ever selling so was not a consideration for me.

Finally, the WG is very understated, and many will glance and assume it's a SS Datejust. That's ideal for me. As you say, "those who know, know". RG is just a bit too showy for me.

RG would be the better of the 2 options. Sure both will be collectable but RG stands out nicely and has that pop.

I had a similar dilemma:
WG vs Platinum.
I went WG DD instead of the Platinum DD because it has a fluted bezel.
I went RG on the Cartier Ballon Bleu because their coloration of “pink gold/rose gold” is a nicer shade(lighter) than the Rolex (darker)....
Good luck in whatever you decide!

I chose wg; with these powerful-looking designs, it’s more than enough.

I had a choice between WG, RG, and Platinum with the Olive Dial, and they’re all gorgeous. The rose gold spoke to me on another level - it just looks perfect to my eye.

That said, get whatever you feel comfortable wearing - spending that money, it’s important to get it right.

I think the WG is a classic and elegant and understated. The RG works if you have the skin tone to match. If it is a possible flip then the RG carries more value at the moment. I think a WG model would work well day to day.

The WG is perhaps a bit more versatile and under the radar than the RG. Both are beautiful though

I went with the RG with olive. The warm hue of RG goes great against the olive dial imo. I wouldn’t worry about RG not being timeless. Chances are this reference will go down as a classic/very sought after well into the future after discontinuation.

Personally, I like my gold to have some color to it. The WG looks too similar to stainless and if I ever do WG or platinum, I will pair it with a diamond bezel and meteorite baguette dial to help differentiate.

I've gone back and forth on this over the years, and I'll probably piss some people off with my current opinion. But the more I think of it the less point I see in getting white gold. I mean they make a perfectly fine metal called stainless steel that does everything gold can do, only better. If Rolex colored stainless steel to look like gold we'd all laugh them out of business. Yet people spend $40K on a gold watch and have them mix the metals up to make it look like stainless steel.

If you gonna get a gold watch, get a gold watch! If you don't like the color, or too flashy, or too worried about getting mugged, get stainless steel and save 75% in the process.

Love the whole DD line but man if I'm gonna throw down that kind of cash for a gold watch I want it to look like a gold watch, not a heavy stainless steel watch. The rose gold is gorgeous - definitely my pick!

I feel the exact same way lol i cant understand a white gold Day date for the life of me. Plat yes i get it but white gold i never could wrap my head around. If u are worried about being to on the rader get stainless steel because i promise u if u dont think muggers or robbers know your watch is gold because its white u are sadly sadly mistaken.

As a proud WG owner I take no offense.
Accurate description of PM vs SS in pricing.
However, put WG next to SS and they don’t look anything alike....

Its the fact u have to put them next to each other to tell the difference that is a major disappointment imo.

I agree 10000000% i almost lost hope on getting the green and almost pulled the trigger on choco. I would have been happy with choco but deep down that green would have been screaming in my dreams.

A DD should look like gold and WG is more suitable for a Sub or GMT

If I had the opportunity to make a decision on those two choices, it would be the WG or me. But obviously you can't go wrong with either...they're both stunning pieces.

go with the rose gold. besides the fact that it looks amazing, you probably won't have the chance to get one at msrp again

My AD told me they are only expecting one more this entire year. No brainer go for the rose.

RG wins by 100 miles for me.

WG looks better with Meteorite dial.

Olive dial looks gorgeous with RG.

I would go with RG (and if I'm lucky, one day I will).

But it's entirely up to you.

I'm going purely on aesthetic appeal. If a watch needs to retain or gain value to be viable, then I probably can't afford it. Again, speaking for myself only.
