Daytona Delimma

I am fairly new to the Rolex collecting world and would like to ask the opinions of you more experienced collectors.

I am/was looking for a TT white dial Daytona and found a guy who has a 1996 Zenith in good condition. This is great, but I am tempted by the stainless Daytona 116520 (2006, great condition) that he also has. Neither has box or papers and both are priced on the lower end of “average”.

Would you:
1. Buy the TT Zenith Daytona and keep my 16610 Submariner (2008)?
2. Sell/trade my Submariner, get the all stainless Daytona, and have a little money left (from what I would have to pay for outright purchase of the TT) to put towards eventually buying something else?

I realize this comes down to personal preference, but I would be interested in hearing your advice to a novice, but older collector.
Thanks

Hmm, I wonder if it's the 2006 116520 Daytona that was stolen from. Buy it and send it into Rolex for service so I can get it back. Careful. Just saying.

I’m sorry I was not clear. The difference I would have to pay in a trade would be less than I would pay for for the outright purchase of the TT.

Either way, they both have no papers. What's the history behind them? The one that got stolen from me doesn't have the papers since I still have them. Buy the seller not the watch.

Personally, I would keep your Sub. It is so versatile compared to the Daytona. If you can keep the Sub and add a Daytona, then yes. If not then no. Also, not a big fan of the tt Daytona.

I have only bought one no box and papers watch and it was a ~$2,500 watch that my wife really wanted. I would never want to buy anything more expensive that did not have box and papers. Too much risk around it being stolen.

No papers, no deal. Too much risk and asking for trouble.

100% agreed - personally no documentation is a huge deal breaker for me. I’ve had my house broken into a few years back, and still have the documents of the watches taken. So I wouldn’t risk buying assets with questionable provenance.

Figure in the cost of a service in your rationalization.

Me, I'd go for the SS model, but prices are silly for those right now, so in reality, I'd get neither.

Sorry. Sometimes it's smarter to do nothing.

Well in the real world the so called papers which are nothing more than in most cases a outdated warranty do not prove authenticity of any watch. As with todays technology things like warranty papers are far easier to fake than the watches.

Thanks for all of your feedback! I will probably wait a little while to see what happens in the market. Right now, watches are crazy expensive, especially those with box and papers.

Zenith has more up side.
Modern Daytona has what is now
considered the best Chronograph movement made.
TT trading $13-$15k. SS Daytona trading with fresh service
$22k plus.
I faced the same opinions sometime back, went SS as the other two Daytona’s I had were TT. Right now I think it’s much easier to flip SS than any other.
Just FYI my first choice would be WG on a strap, but their prices have doubled over the past three years.

I’m a fan of options. So I would vote for keeping the sub and adding the Daytona. Lots of versatility in a collection like that. Two-tone/steel, date/no-date. That would be my vote.

I was in your position as well, looking at a Zenith Daytona SS with no box and paper (You can refer to my previous thread). For me, I specifically wanted a watch with no box and papers, provided the seller offered me a refund if RSC noted something was wrong with the watch such as it being a stolen piece or the parts were counterfeit etc. Box and papers mean nothing these days. It's like adopting a child - do you even care who his/her parents are or do you want to nurture the child to your own lifestyle and believes?

but the main reason I pulled out of the deal was because the 16520 has a really bad bracelet and the watch was light without the feeling of a modern day Rolex such as the 116520 or the 116500. I would recommend buying the 116520. The 16520 will always be my regret - because the dial is special with the second hand at 9pm position as compared to my 116500 but I don't think I will enjoy wearing it on the wrist.

No, do not sell the 16610. The sub is an icon, the daytona simply an instahype chrono that broke no new ground. The sub is rthe more versatile of the watches as well. I have owned a Sub, DJ, ss Daytona, and the Two-Tone Zenith Daytona, only the Sub remains.

I own both TT and all-stainless Daytonas. I way prefer the TT, not even close, to me its a much more beautiful watch and the gold bezel makes it wear ‘bigger’ than the stainless bezel. With that said, I’m definitely in the minority, most people prefer the all stainless and my 116520 will be a better ‘investment’, if that’s important to you. Personally, I’d keep the sub and get the TT Daytona. As an investment, I’ve held Apple and Amazon stocks over the past 10 years, they’ve outperformed anything I’ve ever put on my wrist. Rolex has done the impossible, they’ve made stainless steel more valuable than gold, an impressive (in a comical, human folly sort of way) feat for sure.

Why doesn't he have a box or papers for either? They could be stolen. Just buy grey or from an AD to be certain and careful.

I would buy a Speedmaster Pro. It's affordable, iconic and it makes a perfect pair with a Submariner.
