Thoughts on this 1680’s case

Hi
I’ve been offered this mkV 1680 and am wondering what to think of its case : is it in very good condition or most likely welded/refinished?
The CG in particular look very thick, more than I would expect but when I look at other original examples online, I see No consistency in the CG’s size, even between unmolested pieces.
The seller says it’s been polished once by a very skilled Rolex polished before he bought it 2 years ago and almost not worn since.
Pictures are not amazing but they are all I have for now…
Thanks!

That’s a very chunky case. Do you have pictures of the engravings?

the law of probability says professionally renovated as does the brushing on the top of the lugs though the pictures could be playing tricks, NOS red 1680's are extremely rare. here is one to compare with.

In the next pics, ask him to move the hour hand off the specification text. It’s obscuring important details… yes, I agree the case is suspiciously sharp and crisp.

That case has definitely been recut/refinished/restored, whatever term you want to use. It looks great, but I’d want to see the engravings to confirm authenticity.

BTW, not sure I’ve seen font quite that fat on a 1680 insert before. I guess the lighting could be accentuating it, but it is quite extreme.

For a good comparison basis, here is my 3.4M red sub’s crown guards, and this one is most likely unpolished (true barn find^^)

Case is real. Definitely welded and lapped though.

Case has been nicely detailed and brushed. Looks like the fine work of those LA guys.

Beautiful but definitely restored. Box/Papers? Spacing between numbers seems a bit wide to me.

Looks like a nice example of a professionally refinished case. Nothing wrong with that at all. Some buyers like a nicely refinished case while others prefer a ratty, old, dinged and scratched case. You make the call, it's your money.
