The first one is the worst. The next one will hurt less.

I neither baby my watches nor abuse them. I think the beat up battle scar mentality is as illogical as the safe queen - to me. Each to their own. I wouldn't worry too much about that damage, because I would never see it when I was wearing it.

Anything can be fixed if it annoys you. Then you'll ding it again.

The first one is hard, but I actually pride my sub on the beating it takes. Creating memories and history with the watch. I bring my everywhere. I have brought it diving and fishing, snowboarding, hiking and sailing. Across the world and back. The brushed steel wears it well and I hope you are able to get passed the first ding and put some stories behind this great piece.

The wear on a stainless steel bracelet after a couple of years is almost as nice as the patina on a dial or the fade of a bezel, IMO.

We’ve all been there. I still stare at the first scratch I got on my Datejust. There are many other scratches now that I don’t notice, but the first scratch lives rent free in my head. I should be mentally tougher but here we are.

LOL maybe... was at a client dinner and bumped against the table. So actually quite silly, but the dinner was amazing, so I'll remember that for sure!

No doubt about it for me, that first ding hurts. I do find that after that point I "baby" it less and perhaps enjoy wearing it a little more for being relaxed about no longer having to try to keep it perfect. I hope that's the case for you.

I always enjoyed scratches. They're tool watches that go through life with you. You get bumped, nicked, scratched, banged around along the way... why shouldn't they?

Besides, you're always one service away from a close to showroom shine again, if you happen to want to go that route

For myself, when I'm first looking at a watch that I am considering for purchasing, It's the appearance that 1st draws my attention, then movement, build design, quality of materials etc. So when we find something we like, we obviously tend to look at it often, to appreciate and admire. We tend to associate our original draw to a particular view of the object.

When that appearance is altered, No longer the same, it looses the look that drew us in the first place. Damaged goods if you will. Now damaged vs. Worn. Would you have purchased a badly scratched and dinged watch for the same money vs. A new one of the same model? Probably not.

One reason I usually buy brushed finish watches and usually 316L steel. There appearance doesn't change much with small scratches. After owning a few Rolex's and Omega's with PLC's I now avoid this type of finish for me. In my profession the will without a doubt get damaged.

After time goes by, it's the durability that truly allows me to appreciate a particular piece. Knowing what all it's been threw, still running and providing accurate time keeping. Then I see the REAL beauty in a watch. For me anyway.

Getting my first ding was a huge sigh of relief for me. Now I can go on enjoying the watch without fear of ruining it's "perfectness"

Relax, I picked up my DaytonaC black dial at 4pm then boarded a flight at 6pm. Placing my hand luggage in the overhead storage I wrecked the clasp. I considered it an early christening

Absolutely this. My 10-year-old Sub C clasp has very pleasing wear consisting of micro-scratches that reflect the light beautifully. There should be a name for that (Desk polish? Silk scouring? :-).

It's also important to distinguish between a ding (a serious dent that would be difficult to repair without significant metal removal) and minor scratches from general wear and tear.
