I Can't Stop Looking at T/T DJ and PM President's - Rolex's Strategy All Along
Up until age 50 I was s/s sports watch guy all day long, until I fell in love with and purchased a rootbeer. I also have a Sub and Slate YM. Over the last 2 years I've really become taken with gold and DJs and am nowwaitlisted for a few rose gold options.
I'm wondering if the scarcity of s/s helped broaden my horizons? Either way I'm glad it did. Talking of gold, that Vacheron 222......wow. |

I'm on the list for a RG DD40 Chocolate Motif dial.
Seeing some of the sports models hit 30k+ and realizing you can likely get a full PM DD40 for around 40k retail without a crazy wait time, starts to put things in perspective. |

I was having a similar chat with a friend recently when I was debating between keeping a SS sports or RG OF Daytona due to a lifestyle change. I bet there are many SS watch people that feel the same about a PM DD. It’s an addictive climb up the Rolex ladder.

Rolex had been selling themselves short for years. It was one of their few marketing mis-steps...too much focus and availability on lower cost SS sports references that distracted the market for too long.
People are clearly willing and able to SPEND more on Rolex than even Rolex themselves fully realized until recent years. The full power of the Rolex brand has finally been unleashed and that is being proven in much higher Classic, TT and PM reference purchases than ever before. To the moon!!! |

I am speaking only for myself but my tastes are definitely changing as I get older.
I don't know whether I still actually hate the cyclops or now hate the cyclops because I actually need it. The Day Date is something I always liked but not something I ever thought I would really want but now I totally see myself rocking a rose gold with olive dial while telling people to get off my lawn. |

DD40s especially RG ones are super hard to get now. Some ppl I know going on 15+ months now. I've been waiting for close to 12 and nothing in sight anytime soon. |

I got a VC Patrinony WG last year. My next piece might be a YG sports watch, when I turn 50.

Agree that taste does change with age, but still at 55 don’t like YG: SS, WG or PT for me!

I agree man. I look at my collection and often think about which ones I’d trade for a WG DD. 5 years ago I’d never even consider it.

I’ve been looking more at Purchasing a DD also. I haven’t been a huge fan of their white or rose gold references. I haven’t really cared for the platinum either. But the new yellow gold references are becoming really appealing. I do agree with others that fluted platinum made it stand out less to WIS and that it made both white gold and platinum less appealing simultaneously. I’m just not a rose gold fan it looks too temporary and stylish to me. So that leaves classic YG for me.

In the same boat. Would have never considered anything but SS professional but recently have been looking at TT SkyD on Jubilee or a 36mm YG day date.
I do wear shawl collar cardigans with a white OCBD and repp tie already… |

I dunno about PM or TT being mainly an old man thing. I was first drawn to Rolex many years ago as a young man admiring a YG DD in a shop window. To give you an idea of how many years ago that was, the price was $1,300 as I recall. (could be wrong in my memory) Anyway, my preference for gold never diminished and I've been lucky to have had many over the years. Today I own what some consider to be the ultimate old man's reference, a 36mm TT DJ on jubilee with fluted bezel. I love it and don't give a damn what anyone else thinks of the watch or of me. Go with what sings to you!

Totally agree. Perfectly happy to let others chase trendy green dials and backwards gmts all they like while I enjoy what is perhaps the quintessential Rolex configuration. No one can predict what the hot watch or color trend will be in 40 years, but I’m willing to bet that this DJ configuration will still exist, just as it did almost 75 years ago. Classic for a reason. ![]() |
