Uneven lume on hour hand

Hello,
I got my submariner yesterday from the local AD. I noticed some uneven ,,color“ I guess it’s lume, especially on the hour hand. Does this look normal to you?

Thank you.

Looks ok to me.

Times like this it’s worth remembering that for all the hype Rolex gets as a luxury watch, it’s a mass-produced item—the factory makes about 3,000 of them every day. It’s reasonable to expect quality but not the kind of perfection you’d see in a haute piece.

Thank you for the answers. So it’s normal that from the Mercedes‘ hand the grainy lume color only is in the middle and Fades to the sides? It looks pretty symmetric to me but I thought it’s odd that the grainy part is not filling the hole star.. if you understand what I mean. I spent 10k on this watch and of course want it to be alright.

Thanks guys

Try looking at it from a foot away without a loupe or 50x zoom :) If it looks normal then, you're good.

Looks okay tbh. In any case, you're probably the only one who's ever going to notice haha.

Thank you. I can see it with my bare eyes in some lightning conditions. I just wonder why the white grainy color isn’t evenly distributed on the hour hand.. is this due to the manufacturing?

Unacceptable condition from the #1 watchmaker in the world! Take it back. That's what warranty is for!

From my experience the application of the lume on subs is never perfect. Meaning sometimes its slightly bumpy or raised in some areas and sometimes theres slight gray areas as well. This is the normal process of applying the lume and how it looks though. If you look at the lume under a flashlight with a loop its actually quite grainy and imperfect.

First its quite possible when the lume paint dries in might shrink a bit and show tiny bits that seem to be uneven.Rolex do not make the hands themselves a firm called Aiguilles makes all the watch hands for all models, and doubtful if Rolex would make the lume paint.

Based on a couple units (Including a 2022 Sub Date) that I own with the Chromalight lume, the application has always looked a little bit uneven with some dark "splotches".

I would say this is normal for Rolex.

I do have an older OP with Superluminova that is flawless though.

Thanks for the replies!
So I went to the ad I bought it from. The watchmaker was impressed that I had seen it without a loupe. So he offered me that he could send it to Rolex and they would change the hour hand. He said it was a minor flaw and it had no impact on the value or the function. It glows pretty evenly in the dark.
What would you guys do? It would take 5 weeks. I have 6 years warranty and I could come along anytime to send it in.

We’ll I don’t wanna leave it there for 5 weeks right now. I only bought it on Monday. My plan is to wait and see how much I care about it. If it still bothers me in 6 months then I’ll go to the AD and have them send it in.

What do you think?

Cheers

I would do exactly that. I wouldn’t want to miss the watch either but if it keeps bugging you and they are willing to swap it, than i would do it. The only thing is that you don’t have any garantees that the next hand doesn’t have it either.

I wouldn’t sweat it—like I said, it’s a Rolex not a VC or a Patek. But if it really bothers you, maybe wait 5 years and then have it done along with a full service? (Honestly, the movements in the new Subs have proven to be glitchy—you could genuinely need a service before then.) I wouldn’t lose a brand new watch for 5 weeks over something so minor. But that’s just me.

For now, enjoy!—it’s an awesome watch.
