Pepsi GMT considered inferior vs Sub back in the day?

Although subjective, I always thought that my 16700 was less of the watch when I wore in for 20+ years compared to the sub till the recent craze for sport watches. Purchased the GMT back in 1995 and always had buyer's remorse not getting a sub instead, that I wore a black bezel insert while I had the GMT.

Not gonna lie, I felt like I had an "entry level" Rolex around that time with the Datejust being way above the sport watches being out of my league as a teenager. But the true entry level piece was the Air King at that time if I'm not mistaken.

I thought I was the only one who felt this way till a read a similar comment here last night regarding the Sub being a better recognized Rolex.

Trends change and the rise of social media made the dual color bezel of GMTs more in demand than a black sub.

Tru dat. So safe to say that back in the 90's, the submariner was a more popular choice as what I felt? Although, I met a few GMT fanatics in college around that time.

Good question. The sub was perhaps the only "really cool" watch I was aware of growing up but that probably had a lot to do with my interest in ocean exploration. If I wanted to become a pilot perhaps the GMT would have been more on my radar (so to speak...).

The Sub is one of the most, if not the most, recognized watch in the world and has literally created a fleet of industries dedicated to making copies/homages/whatever of it. Most of those companies also do GMTs now as well. Not sure when or why the GMT started passing the sub in terms of coolness factor but it has.

Very good point! But as for me circa 1995, I didn't have much direction in life lol.

I don't think this is the case. The GMT Master was the choice of no shortage of 'cool guys', fictional or real life alike. Hell, if anything I think it was probably perceived as more prestigious than the Submariner for quite a while.

I used to see a lot more Subs than GMTs.
I purchased the Black ceramic version years ago back in the days when everything was available in the show cases because I thought it was something different to the Sub.
Now I own 4 Subs :)

The Daytona was a poor seller in its day.

You are right, the Sub was the more popular choice.

Nowadays might be the opposite

Yes, that's true. And the Sub Date had always been a bit more expensive than the GMT. This was reversed only last year. And speaks volumes about how the trends have changed.

Mmm, I don't know if I'd use the word inferior. But I would say it seemed, to me anyway, when I first joined the forum, the sub commanded more respect..and maybe a little more of a premium? I mean, you could get a Pepsi with all three bezels for around 4k all day long in those days.

When the references moved to six digits, pretty much all you heard was how nobody was ever going to buy a sub for 10k. The idea of a GMT going for 20k would have probably got you banned.

Modern GMT line has well & truly overtaken the Submariner line

I remember the pre ceramic days when you could buy the Pepsi GMT for £2800 brand new from an AD & the LV Sub around 2008 was £3280

There is still more requests for black subs than any other. There are less Pepsi’s thus the higher price tag.
