If you will end up owning both in due course just go for the one which turns up first. If listed for both at your AD it is highly unlikely that you will be offered both simultaneously. When the first one appears, cancel the other one.

Agree with the above. You’ll end up with both at some point. Once you have one, you’ll yearn for the other. So get whichever is easier to get first :)

DateJust

Of the two, and considering what you already have, I'd go with the DateJust. There are several other divers that I think are better and more interesting than the Sub. The datejust is unique and quintessential Rolex and will suit most if not all occasions. Go with the DateJust now and then if you still want a diver down the road find one that you really like. I honestly don't think you'll have a long wait whether you go with the Sub or the DateJust.

Sounds like you dress more casual than not so I'd go the Sub. The DJ is definitely a "dressier" watch.

The Speedmaster can still be your "dress-up" watch on the bracelet.

I think what most people here will tell you is to get what you most desire or love most, but in my opinion a Sub date would be a great idea.

I would opt for the Submariner, with or without date. A long time ago, I also had a Speedmaster and was tempted by the Submariner. I went, though, for a GMT Master II, with the black/red bezel, partly for the GMT function, and partly to avoid having two sport watches with black dials and black bezels. Given the cost, I felt guilty about buying a Sub because it too closely resembled the color scheme of the Speedmaster.

So, the GMT was my first Rolex, I still have it 22 years later...still love it...but the desire for a Submariner didn't go away. Eventually, I said, "to hell with it" and bought the Submariner Date.

In truth, all three watches are quite different...in terms of function. The Speedmaster, obviously, is a chronograph. The GMT is designed for travel, with easy time changes and the ability to track another time zone (or two). And the Sub is a diver's watch. As you might imagine, as many here would appreciate, over time, as my interest in watches deepened, the three look quite different to me. Hell, the Submariner Date looks different to me than the Submariner!

Your wife may never see it that way, but do point out, if you get the Sub, that its function is different and that its water resistance far better than the Speedmaster. Above all, tell her that you really love the watch (if you do and wind up getting it). She may not appreciate the visual differences, but she might well appreciate and understand how the watch feels to you, how it makes you feel.

These are decisions best made from the heart, not the head. And, your wife may well relate to that. There may be clothes, or shoes, or jewelry, that she values that look kind of the same to you, but are completely different to her and speak to her differently.

Submariner. My first two luxury watches were a Submariner and Speedmaster. I’ve added several since then, including a DJ41 and GMT, but these were my first 2 luxury watches.

Depends on your personal style, but I'd vote for the Sub.

Yes, it is. But it's the previous generation, 1863. The latest sapphire sandwich model doesn't come on an alligator strap.

Once I get the second watch I think I am going to do this to my 1863, especially if I go sub, as I think it really dresses up the speedy.

DJ 36--is this for you or your wife? My petite wife wears a Sub on an orange RubberB strap. Go 41mm Sub!

Thanks again everyone. Officially on the list for the Sub date, but if the specific DJ model I am looking for comes in and is not spoken for, they are going to give me a call so I can come take a look. Hopefully I'll join the Submariner's owners club here before the end of 2024!

With your limited horizon of further acquisitions for a while, I would get the Sub.
