I'll always remember his base lines in American Beauty and Workingman's Dead. It was the first time I really took notice of a bass players playing. I've been following the Dead since their first album was released. Jerry was gone in '95 but this, thirty years later, seem like a real end to an era.

This one hit hard. I have been very down all day since hearing. The Dead were so special. If you get it, you get it.

Sing me back home.

Box of Rain is one of my all-time favorites. Glad I saw them a bunch back in the day. Phil was amazing. RIP.

As we started the intro to Friend of The Devil at last nights gig our guest guitarist mentioned over the mic that we just lost Phil Lesh. I had no idea.

Never a Grateful Dead fan. But I really respect the band for its unique business model approach & sheer longevity. While our bass playing styles could not be more opposed I also recognize his amazing ability to hold down the bottom while playing everywhere but the root. A true iconoclast of the bass guitar.

RIP, PL.

Longtime Deadhead here, having gotten on "The Bus" in 1982.

Phil was one of a kind on stage, and in life in general. An ardent supporter of organ donation, and always spoke about it on stage. Maybe, just maybe, his words saved someone else's life.

Rest Easy Phil

RIP Phil. I never got to see him live, unfortunately. I had tickets to the Peach Music Festival in 2018 where he played with the Terrapin Family Band, but my friend got married that weekend and I had to sell the tickets.

I’m not at all trying to “defend” the GD business philosophy or approach, but as a Dead fan since 1978, I will say that their “model” was so haphazard and unintentional, it is really funny that it perhaps helped spawn the current model of selling live recordings of shows.

They seem like they were ahead of their time, but all evidence points to their drive just to keep shows fun and interesting for them and their fans. Their varied set lists, impromptu jamming, etc. was just for their own intellectual curiosity rather than a way to get fans to attend more than one show. It’s all so funny looking back at what it became 50 years later.

Glad you respect and appreciate them even if they weren’t your thing.
