Just got back from a winter wine club pickup party at Restoration Vineyards in Palisade, CO where they asked us to make lip balms at the market specially for their members and told us we could sell our candles too. We had a great day! 230 lip balms when out in their wine club shipments and another 140 were given away at the pickup party. And, we sold 44 candles in 3 hours! I’m wiped out.

It was! This is our busy season. We have 3 more markets in the next month and are doing a 3 day sale at our shop the weekend after Thanksgiving. I'm heading to the local wineries today to pick up more bottles to cut to make more wine bottle candles before our next market.

Looks like a great weekend! Did that Mondavi still present well, or was it on the backside?

Not sure what they get paid out here, but I'm assuming it is not a reduced wage because of tips.

As we hit the wineries over the next couple of weeks, I'm going to see if some of the owners I know are willing to tell me what their starting wages are and what they think about tipping on wine purchases.
So I've talked to a couple of winery owners now and sounds like the average pay for tasting room staff is around $17/hr to $20/hr. The owners said they do not expect guests to tip 20+% on cases/bottle bought but suggested that buyers tip on the tasting/glass/bottle service, and then if buying bottles add just a little extra for the bottle purchases. One suggested $10-$20 more for a case purchase.

So it sounds like the tasting room staff has gotten use to people tipping on the full totals since that is the way the tip screens work these days and are just spoiled.

I’ve had a couple different Orin Swift wines, wasn’t a huge fan, but this one is very nice!

Our neighbors shared this 2009 Barolo with us tonight. It was my first cellar aged Barolo & I was blown away. Looked like a lighter red in the glass but it was still a full bodied red with floral notes along with cranberries / cherries and spices. Amazing.

Simply...The Wine Thread

My wife and I started a small business in retirement and we bought these two wines for our “employee appreciation” Christmas party tonight in the RV. The company is just the two of us!
