the 42mm Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph models, consumer preferences have evolved alongside the brand's advancements in movement technology:

Caliber 2385 (1998–2021): This movement, based on the Frédéric Piguet 1185, is appreciated for its slim profile and reliable performance. Many enthusiasts value its established track record and the smooth operation of its chronograph functions. Its longstanding use in the Royal Oak line has garnered a loyal following among collectors who favor traditional craftsmanship.
Hodinkee

Caliber 4401 (2021–Present): Introduced in 2021, the in-house Caliber 4401 has been met with enthusiasm for its modern features, including a column wheel, vertical clutch, and flyback function. Consumers appreciate its extended 70-hour power reserve and the seamless integration of the chronograph mechanism. The movement's technical advancements and in-house development resonate with those seeking contemporary innovation in their timepieces.
Monochrome Watches

Overall, while the Caliber 2385 remains respected for its reliability and classic appeal, the Caliber 4401 is increasingly preferred by consumers who prioritize modern engineering and enhanced functionality in their Royal Oak Chronographs

Despite what some people here will say (that I am a fool and that I commit blasphemy by criticizing the brand they decided to leverage for their personality), 4401 is a bad caliber.

Service intervals are shorter, issues are numerous and in general I’d say it’s not pretty to look at. There a lot of machin finished parts that feel stale. My source being AP employee (not boutiques, remember I am Swiss and have friends in each big house), I trust them.

Don't you think they are working on making it more reliable? I mean, watches that will be produced in 2025 may be better than the one of 2022.

Couldn't agree more. I own 4 now with 4401 and its a terrible caliber.

The front of each watch is beautiful but I'd prefer a gold/steel caseback than looking at the CNC monstrosity.

Also all 4 have gone back to service because of wandering subdials.

Caliber 2385 had multiple iterations also, my 42mm ROO seized up one day refused to wind or let me wind in the crown, when I called AP they said its a known issue because my movement is old, and they replaced my movement with a different variant for the price of a full service. So this is just to illustrate that there are nuances and the comment saying reliability will improve is generally valid...lets hope :D

Indeed, looking at it closely you see how it really is. Beside the oscillating mass, there’s no interesting sharp inner or outer polished angle.
