With the watch market downturn has anyone considered unloading pieces that don't get too much wrist time and getting out before taking a loss? I'm feeling conflicted because I do like knowing I have them but don't really have an interest in wearing them.

If I don’t wear a piece, it’s gone. I totally get it’s nice to have them feeling but they would need to go. End of story. That’s why I’m very picky in what I purchase. I keep what I buy and I wear them. Yes I would sell them if you don’t enjoy them and get something else you would wear or just keep the money if you already have what you like.

This hobby is bad enough avoiding hemorrhaging money but selling just to sell in a down market is idiotic. The caveat to this is if you need the money in an emergency. This form has shown that taste change and many circle right back around to what they liked years previous only to repurchase at a significantly higher cost.

because if you believe its going back to 2010-2016 prices its not going to get better than this and if it does you can buy back in anyway at a lower price point.

I don't think now is the time to sell, especially now that we're getting closer to the holidays. I'd wait for the spring to sell. Pricing may rebound a bit by then.

Collecting watches shouldn't be an investment strategy, it's a hobby or pastime. If you are expecting your investment to always keep up with inflation or better yet, take off with sky-high returns, you should be looking at a different investment vehicle.

Sell 'em if you no longer have the enthusiasm, let somebody else enjoy them, buy some stocks.

The state of the market doesn't factor in for me. Watches that I have stopped wearing because I don't like them for one reason or another are moved on. I wouldn't sell something because it's losing value or because it's multiples of MSRP. My watch collecting brain doesn't work like that. You do you.

The hobby is alot of fun.

If I added in whether or not I should sell due to prices, it would destroy the enjoyment (for me)

At this point, I would unload a few only if I was buying/trading for another watch. I have a few dust collectors but I still wind/set and wear them once in a while.

On the contrary I have decided to hold on to my watches for a long time. I learned my lesson when I had 16510 SS white Daytona bought for $5k in 2005 and sold for $9k in 2010. I should have kept it. Now I bought a 126500 same SS white paying through my nose.

It’s a common dilemma for collectors. If a watch no longer brings you joy or is kept only for potential value, it might be worth selling before prices drop further. What downturn in the market? Business is robust everywhere. Ballooned prices of a few years ago have reached more saner levels on the hyped pieces. Most watches lose value on the used market and that is normal. Watches are personal goods not investments. It is always a good time to sell a watch if you longer wear or want it.

If you don't wear them sell them. Prices will not be coming back to the Covid price lunacy. If you bought something grey at a loony tunes price, either take the hit or just keep and wear the watch.

Unfortunately Covid turned this hobby that most of us do for enjoyment into a commodity futures trading game. Maybe the commodity traders will switch to pork bellies.

I can’t think of a single watch that stands to lose SIGNIFICANT value in the near future except maybe the AP 15202. Nothing else should be sold with the strategy of buying back at a later date at a lower value.

Nah...I think you shall find that most members of this forum have no concern of "taking a loss" on a wristwatch. The amount of money at stake is relatively insignificant...etc

Agreed ! there have been many watches I have purchased and many that I sold.Markets do not matter it's a hobby that I personally enjoy .Watch collecting/hunting for that piece is fun and addicting.
