PM Piece for the 50th Birthday / milestone and recommendations ?

Hi fellow members.

Hope everyone is having an amazing thanksgiving.

Been a long time watch enthusiast, the passion started with a Tag Heuer F1 when I was 16... and I will, in the upcoming months, turn 50... Been a long journey enjoying various watches

Eying the idea of a PM piece after having Omegas, Rolex GMT, Daytona, Subs, AP, Blancpain that were all in steel or Ceramic.

Trimmed down the collection as of late and only have left a GMT Blue-Black on Jubilee. I have been eying either the following to commemorate the 50th combined with a substantial milestone.

Rolex Day-Date 36 or 40 Yellow Gold with Green Ombre Dial ( 128238 / 228238 )
Rolex Daytona White gold silver dial or Yellow Gold Oysterflex champagne / deep black (126519 / 126518 )

I love all 3 equally on paper and on the website as I am still unable to see them in real life...

Of the 3, what would be your pick and why and if you happen to own any of these, how is the wearability of them / life with them.

Thanks

I would go after a DD40 in YG. The classic PM Rolex.

I have a silver dial YG DD40 and love it. If I had it all to do over again, I think I would pick the 36. My tastes have changed as I’ve gotten older. I would probably just sell the 40 and get the 36, but my middle son has claimed it and would be devastated. I really don’t think you could go wrong with either DD. Happy hunting.

…my choice would be the 128238.

Day Date is the quintessential Rolex. Day Date and Daytona are two very different pieces, so I guess it depends on which one aesthetically wows you, lifestyle and how you plan to wear it. Will it be special occasions only or part of a routine rotation ?
The Daytona doesn't have a date if that matters.
For me personally because the professional design aesthetic appeals to me more than a dress watch and my lifestyle, I chose the Daytona on OF. I largely wear it or my WG Sub. I don’t like a full YG watch for myself so the OF is a good middle ground.

You have less versatility in a YG PM watch, especially in only a 2 watch collection. Really depends how comfortable you are wearing an all YG watch all the time - for me, it is a bit too much flash unless in a larger collection. Personally would go with the WG Daytona, sell the GMT and then buy a YG daydate. Or to stay within the same budget, sell the GMT, buy a SS Daytona and YG Daydate then you will have much more use between the two while conquering the best of the rolex lineup.

The DD for sure with the hombre dial for you special occasions and dinners, etc…
The Daytona OF is a sporty piece. I like them both for different purposes.

Cheers,

All of your choices would be great ! Just personal preference/happiness is what counts.
For me…if I were matching/pairing up with a professional model… DD40 would be my choice without a doubt.

DD40 was the first watch that came to mind but whatever you think will bring you the most enjoyment.

I would go Day Date for a PM watch.

Taking price considerations aside, I actually prefer stainless steel for all of the professional watches and precious metal for the classic watches.

I would go PM on a bracelet. The DD is the choice here or look at a Daytona on a bracelet.

I'd go with the Day-Date. I was able to try on an oysterflex daytona this weekend, and while a great timepiece, I think I would have preferred it with a full gold bracelet - seemed on the smaller side to me.

Agreed that it’s totally a lifestyle issue.

That being said, my vote would be a DD. Try on the 36 and 40 to see what you like.

Day-date for sure, though I would go with a silver or white dial - more timeless, and a better look on the gold bracelet. Whether you go 36 or 40 depends on your wrist size. If both sizes look good, I'd go 40

The 36mm Day-Date is the traditional President. I'd choose white gold and Hombre diet, as it's more subtle than the yellow gold. Or a white gold Daytona. You can also get a white gold Pepsi with blue or meteorite dial, if you want a sportier PM watch that isn't flashy like yellow gold.

For a 50th birthday - Day Date 100%. That dark green dial is phenomenal.
Size wise it is really up to your preferences and wrist size.
