The Mako II uses the Orient 46943 movement which has been in production since the late 60s. It may not be the most accurate movement but it is very robust and reliable (decades of proven track record). Its a 21J, 21,600 bph bi-directional winding movement. There are users who reported COSC specs accuracy but mine is running consistently at -10 secs/day. I'll be getting the watch regulated later. As for its price, the RRP is US$250. There was a recent Christmas offer for 50% off the RRP. This may just be one of the few decent affordable automatics u can find.

Orient makes an excellent time piece for the money and
Mako series has been well known for their robustness and excellent lume.

This is my very first Japanese mechanical time piece. To be honest, had i not receive this as a gift, i'll probably never get to own one. That said, i'm pleasantly surprised by its quality. It may not be top notch but its certainly better than my expectation. To be able to produce a watch like this at such an affordable price is even more impressive.

interestingly enough they make a professional model in htis watch thats 1,250.00 lets see ... 1250 or 125.00 Wonder whats makes the other worth 10 times the price??

I dont have the exact weight for this watch but its certainly heavier than my Rolex 16710, feels a little heavier than my Ball watches and its a little lighter than my Steinhart Nav B Chrono II (which is pretty hefty BTW). IMO, it does not feel cheap and it wears comfortably on the wrist.

This one is getting as much wrist time as my Steinhart. I'm not sure if u've noticed, the Orient movement has very little (if any) slack in the hands. With other movements (ETA, Rolex, etc.), u have to take up the slack in the min hand when setting time. If not, the min hand may not be precisely in sync with the sec hand. This is never an issue with the Orient movement. In addition, its so quiet that i cant even hear any movement ticks. This has given me a new perspective to affordable Japanese mechanical movements.

Thanks for the comments. I'm really glad i received this watch as a Christmas gift (i'm not the only one getting a watch, another member received a Ball NT from WTW Santa!!!

). Its still getting lots of wrist time and i had the watch regulated. The Orient movement, developed for hardy fuss free operation, is not as accurate as some other movements IMO. The watch was regulated to within COSC specs but it appears to have a wider variance than Swiss movements. In terms of usage, i believe it should be as tough as a Seiko Monster. There are only 2 issues with this watch:

1) Folded end links instead of solid end links. U'll get a bit of rattling but if that doesnt bother u, it should be fine.

2) The lume is weak despite of the relatively generous lume areas.

One really nice thing about the watch is the bezel. The rotation is smooth and positive. Its easy to grab and turn, yet it retains sufficient resistance to prevent the bezel from accidental turns. This is something that my 16710, costing many times the price of the Orient lacks.
