Canadians traveling to the USA with more than one Rolex?

Further to the import thread that is currently active....

Comments in a couple of threads have suggested that foreigners traveling TO the USA carrying more than ONE personal Rolex, could be grounds for some major hassles.

If true,I do not understand this. Why the heck could I not take my two hard-earned watches with me if I so desire?I was planning on taking two with me next vacation to California. My YM for dinners and functions out...and my soon to arrive ND Sub for hanging at the pool, golfing etc.I was planning on wearing both watches down on my wrist for safely purposes.

Am I to understand that I am actually NOT permitted to legally do so?

Any clarification most appreciated!

That's correct.

It has to do with the Trademark law and Customs law working together.. The Trademark owner, Rolex, can, by law, place stipulation on it's trademark goods that enter through Customs to the country. Rolex has written into the Customs requirements that a person shall only hand carry one Rolex trademarked watch without permission of the Trademark owner (them)..

If you properly own more than one, then it can work out just fine in the end...it's getting to the end that becomes the problem when a Customs Agent decides that you are breaking the law and either have a counterfeit (which you have to prove otherwise), or you are carrying extra watches into the country for sale...or you bought them cheaply outside and are bring them in with out paying customs etc., etc...

Both countries have forms that you can fill out ahead of time attesting that you own them all, and if they are shown to customs upon exit, then they can be brought back..

We have the form over in our Reference Library under "Interesting Links" for US travelers.. I'm not sure what the Canadian form is..

Actually, I've heard that Canada is worse for this than the USA...

If you read the US Customs rules, yes that is correct, you can only carry in one Rolex to the USA. It is part of a Rolex USA policy used to help protect their AD network. That said, I have been to GTG's where people have brought in numerous Rolex watches, maybe a copy of your sales invoice would help with any Customs issues.

Apparently you can contact customs Canada at the Airport in Vancouver and have your watches registered that they were purchased within Canada.

Rolex watches do come with a country code and if you follow it up with a bill of sale or warranty card I find it hard to believe you can't bring more than 1 watch abroad with you.

I travel several times a year thru the U.S and have never experienced any problems carrying more than 1 Rolex watch, I usually bring 2 or 3 with me.

As far as Canada is concerned the only issue you will have is customs duties, if your watch was purchased and paid for in Canada then no worries, it's the ones purchased duty free that have to be declared, and the Gov of Canada wants the taxes and duty fees.

In the 30+ years of traveling i've never been asked to open my luggage when entering back into Canada. If you still feel uncomfortable contact the customs agency for both countries and get an answer from the source.

Now, after reading all of the above, I know why I love New Zealand.

You could walk into this country with at least 3 Rolexes and nobody in NZ Customs would give a hoot.

But...........but walk in with a seed of any flower, any fruit, any undisclosed eatable item...........and you're dead!!

Tying this back to another thread ..... we now have a reason to own a Panerai (I already do). I assume that you can easily enter Canada with one Rolex and one other "non-Rolex" watch; just not with two Rolex watches.

Silly laws.

If you are not exporting them and you have them for personal use you should register them before you leave Canada. Another issue is some counties restrict what you bring in as a visitor. Two Rolex watches maybe restricted like other personal use goods?

For US citizens returning to the US.
"According to the U.S. Customs Service, as of January 2003: The Rolex trademark recordation with Customs indicates "Import of Goods Bearing Genuine Trademarks or Trade Names Restricted." This means that genuine Rolex products can only be imported with the permission of the trademark owner, Rolex Watch U.S.A. Inc. A private individual can hand carry one Rolex watch from a trip overseas without obtaining permission. Bring in more than one, and they will be seized as a trademark violation. Purchasing a Rolex from overseas by mail is also a trademark violation"
Hope that helps.
