Truck Stop watch
Grrrrrrr
So I was working today (I work for lawyers taping depositions) and when I sat down, the doctor across from me noticed my watch (TT YM blue) and when I noticed him noticing my watch I turning my eyes away from his eyes. So, I looked down to see what he was wearing. I got a quick glance at a look-a-like black sub. (aka Homage) He hid his watch under his Dr. coat pretty quickly so I wouldn't realize what he was wearing. I was not close enough to see what it was called (sorry). So at the very end of the taping. The hiring attorney said, what is that? (as she grabs my arm to look at my watch) and the next word out of her mouth was "did you get that at a truck stop". I simply said no and was boiling mad. I felt like saying F*&# you, but it's a client. Any suggestions? I see threads about; does any one compliment you on your watch... have you ever been insulted and accused of wearing a fake? |

I've never been accused of wearing a fake but if I had been in your situation I wouldn't take it seriously. I would laugh and tell her where she could buy one just like it for $10,000 or whatever it cost.

The "No" was fine.....I would have added, with a smile, "why do you ask"....and I would have waited to see what she said.....

Hmmm, glad he's not my doctor ("yes sir, I only use quality equipment/surgical instruments etc, not those cheap copies that will rust your insides out")
Seriously, no need to say anything. He KNEW he was wearing a fake, and he also probably knew you'rs was real, so tried to cover his embaressment by insulting you.. Try and rise above it, as I think you have the last laugh...

I would have said, "No, I bought it at (your favorite) Jewelers. I paid cash but they DO finance if you are interested.

You should write a novel. The way you framed this is great. I deal with some pretty high priced attorneys that wear nice dress watches (not Rolex sport models)and although they are on my dime (should be dollar today), they look at me as though I should be wearing a snoopy watch instead of a Rolex (they notice). I have given up on expecting a complement and simply enjoy that I'm wearing a nicer watch IMO than they are! I look forward to the day they come in wearing a nice Rolex so I can complement them on their taste. She must have been wearing a $20 Avon model and distracted you from noticeing!! |

Hey, no big deal....frustrating? YES, but it seems that most people will automatically assume that if it says ROLEX then it must be a fake.
You know you've got the real deal and so does anyone else that matters.

I would have asked the good attorney:
Whether she was ever taught to never ask a question that she didn't know the answer? |

I would say "Actually yes! There was a big oil station in the desert that had a few Rolex shops. You should go there one day. It's called Dubai or something like that."

That's a good question Lucas... Rolex sells nearly 1 million watches a year, so I guess someone is buying them yeah, I know some of the members here have more than 1, so maybe some of you are just HOARDERS

My 2 cents:
I am sorry, however, I worked in law enforcement and I still have a real people phobia against someone touching me without my consent. Too many close quarter combat situations. No one grabs my arm, no one, I could care less if they were the most important person in the world. They would end on the deck in a New York minute. They would most likely have a broken arm or wrist. That is why people shake hands to greet each other and stay out their personal space. You do not let people touch you without your consent also, what it shows, is that she is expressing her will over you, making you servant to her, in front of others. Some how, some way you needed to put her in her place in a professional way. An example would be to say I do not appreciate you touching me, please do not do that again while pulling away from her. You do not need to even talk about the watch. I am talking about this specific situation, which was uncalled for, and not a fun and games type of situation, or work related situation where you need to be working up close and personal. |

As far as grabbing my wrist to do a wrist check. I accepted this type of inspection in the Air Force, and police academy, but you don't touch people unless the guard has been let down. For example, If I had been a best man in a friends wedding, and had a serious friendship, He can grab my wrist in the police station to do a wrist check. That's what we do as people once a relationship has been formed. The normal greeting for true friends is a hand shake, and possibly a pat on the shoulder. Same when leaving their company. Everything in between is cool. Assuming you know their name.
For some slick to approach you, and they don't know you from Adam, and do a wrist audit in front of everyone is uncalled for. I would have dressed him down right there. Simply look at your arm where he touched you for atleast 10 seconds, and then ask "What's the deal with you touching me? Do I look like your fishing buddy? Second, I resent you discussing my wristwatch in such a manor" Walk away wiping your sleeve. He's a clown. Don't worry about it. |

Evan, I think you handled the situation JUST FINE - it ended without any bitter words or worse, regrettable actions. I'm sure you were furious and spent quite a bit of time afterward thinking of all sorts of things you could've/should've/would've said to her, but the moment had already passed and there was nothing you could do about it.
I'm the same way - generally non-confrontational in the heat of the moment, but afterward I stew over things, get REALLY mad, and think of what I could've done differently. At the end of the day, it's only a watch, and it makes you happy, which is all that matters. It may not be a bad idea to have a potential "zinger" response tucked away in your mind just in case you do happen to cross paths with this attorney again in the future, but aside from that, I would just let it go so you can focus your energy on the people and things that you do care about, not those that you don't.

What a bitch! I'll bet she had quite a little laugh at your expense. You could go to Human Resources and complain. If it's one of your firms attorneys she'll be told not to insult the help and if it's a visiting attorney she'll also be told not to insult the help. Interesting fact about "higher ups". They have managers too and those executives and managers want their direct reports to have people skills. This clown of an attorney made herself feel real special at your expense but probably wouldn't have done so if her boss was in the room.

It has been suggested that my Rolex might be fake, but mainly because they just don't know a fake from the real thing. Occasionally, I'll take it off and let them take a good look and they have always been convinced that is real, although, I can tell that they find it incredible that someone as frugal as I am wears a Rolex.
When people act as though the lawyer did, it is a clear indication of how shallow and crude they really are regardless of their education. You just can't buy character. |

A strange twist of events... My watch has only been noticed and commented upon once. I just said "yea..." when asked if that was a Rolex. I'm quite comfortable with that, compared to the alternative such as this.

In the whole conversation with the attorney, the word "Rolex" never came out. I didn't want to say anything that would have the court reporter come over and look, too. I like to keep a low profile. If I was alone I would of probably said something more of "no it's a real Rolex. Why aren't you wearing one?"
I own a Rolex to remind me of my success in life, not to impress others. I love the "Honey, I only pick up women like you at the truck stop!" Hey East Bay Rider, She was a visiting attorney from Tennessee. Sorta glad. |
