To the OP: This is a great question.

I am not rich enough to own all of the Rolex watches that I would like to own, so I have decided to buy calibres instead of references. In other words, if I have a 14060m, then I won't buy the Expy I, even though I love that watch. If I have a 16710, then I won't buy the Expy II, even though I also love that watch.

Sorry, but that's the best I can do so far.

Good, thought-provoking question by the OP, to which the best answer I can think of came from Larry (Tools).

....... You don't need to select "one over the other"... You select the one you feel like wearing for that day or week, or just for a single occasion...........

For collectors, it's all about the theme or direction of the collection... Some of these may only see a couple of hours of wrist time in a year or more...

.......... Justifying the cost......... Well, if you can't afford to play the game, you shouldn't risk your home or family's well being for a watch...

On a further note on cost.... I have friends who have more wrapped up in their model trains, custom car paint, or wall paintings than I will ever have tied up in my watches.........
Well said Larry (as usual) At this point in my life - I am an owner/wearer not a collector (16710 Mon thru Thu, 14060 Fri thru Sun, and a Zenith for church). Although I can afford it, I would feel guilty owning a collection of $25,000+ in watches that sit in a safe. But when my daughter is out of college, I expect my priorities will change to collecting.
btw - that is a good topic for the next thread - what constitutes a collection vs a wearable rotation

No, I don't wear them at the same time, but I need a primary and a backup just in case.

I don't really try. Most of my watches are chronographs because that is what I use in my work.
