To the OP: This is a great question.

I am not rich enough to own all of the Rolex watches that I would like to own, so I have decided to buy calibres instead of references. In other words, if I have a 14060m, then I won't buy the Expy I, even though I love that watch. If I have a 16710, then I won't buy the Expy II, even though I also love that watch.

For collectors, it's all about the theme or direction of the collection... Some of these may only see a couple of hours of wrist time in a year or more...

On a further note on cost.... I have friends who have more wrapped up in their model trains, custom car paint, or wall paintings than I will ever have tied up in my watches.........

Well said Larry (as usual) At this point in my life - I am an owner/wearer not a collector (16710 Mon thru Thu, 14060 Fri thru Sun, and a Zenith for church). Although I can afford it, I would feel guilty owning a collection of $25,000+ in watches that sit in a safe. But when my daughter is out of college, I expect my priorities will change to collecting.

I don't really try. Most of my watches are chronographs because that is what I use in my work.
