How do you check accuracy?
I see alot of threads and post where people say that their watch is gaining or losing seconds. My question is how do you know? What are you comparing the watch against to see how accurate it is?
The only thing I have tried is opening the time/date window on my computer, and comparing second hands. It appears to have gained ~7 seconds in a week, not bad at all from what I understand. Is this a proper way to compare? |

Hi there,
You could use an atomic watch like US navy watch @ http://www.time.gov/ for the official US time, or http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/ Set the time on your watch and check it against the atomics after 24hours. To have better accuracy. Set the time on your watch at say 10am, and check against the atomics in 10 days (at 10am). Divide the difference with 10 and you will get you difference +/- secs /day . Have fun

Call Rolex every day and ask what time is it. After about 2 weeks you will have an idea about how off your watch is. And the phone bill will probably be the price of a Rolex.

I don't check the accuracy of my watches that much. I am not anal like that. Maybe only when I have to reset the date.

I hope to use a GPS tomorrow, one that came built into my new cell phone.
Does anyone know if a GPS reading is more accurate than an internet reading from an atomic clock? They both have to travel some distance to get to you, but I thought the GPS, compensated for the distance travelled and time taken from the satellite atomic clock to the GPS device. |

GPS sats are in geosynchronous orbit at about 23k miles over the center of the earth. Given the speed of light at 186,282.397 miles per second, I think you're fine for the accuracy of a Rolex.

GPS is excellent for telling the time. It compensates for everything! All the satellites have atomic clocks on board and various correction methods are used to take account of relativistic effects (you'll have to read up on Einstein for that one but, basically, moving clocks run slow and the velocity of a GPS satellite is high enough for this effect to be noticeable) and to ensure that the GPS unit you're using also knows the correct time. As light (and radio waves) travel 186 miles in a millisecond, high accuracy is needed at both ends, though the actual means by which GPS determines your position means that atomic clock accuracy is not needed by your GPS receiver, which is just as well! It still leaves you with a very accurate clock, though.
In the UK, clocks with a radio receiver built-in which update from an atomic clock are very cheap. I presume these are also available in other countries? |

Watches with a radio receiver are getting big here in the US, they run about $30-$100 for the Casio brand ones. The hard part is setting your time zone.

Unfortunately in Australia there doesn't seem to be watches or clocks that are capable of atomic clock radio reception. Thanks jaycee
That's a handy device Mike. I just found out that my GPS software is fixed to UTC time, but that's O.K. I can still use it to set the correct minutes and seconds on my watches :) |

Like Mike, I use this one to set my other watches.
